Mr Robot — Series 3: Episodes 5 & 6 — eps3.4_runtime-err0r.r00 and eps3.5_kill-pr0cess.inc

11th February, 2018.

That is — if you’ve watched the little introductory video — a very true observation to make.

Even if I do say so myself.

Yes …

It’s been snowing.

And, frankly?

I’m just glad I’ve not been out in it.

Or, at least … more than I had to be.

Yeah: it’s been a day off.

And yes: I’ve done some shopping.

Actually?

I’ve ALSO helped my mother do some shopping.

Bless, she’s decided she can — with a little help from me — afford to buy me a new computer, for my birthday, in March: for which I’m eternally grateful.

You can probably tell what brand, can’t you … ?

And what model … !

I think I’ve solved the three monitor problem!

~≈§≈~

At any rate, that’s not what I was …

I was going to say that wasn’t what I intended to tell you.

But you can’t not expect a boy to blab excitedly, can you?

At ANY rate … ?

I’ve had a good day.

And rounded it off with more episodes from the third season of Mr Robot.

Yes, hotting up is accurate …

Episode 5 — eps3.4_runtime-err0r.r00 — sees Elliot (Rami Malek) with no memory of the previous four days: heading innocently back to a job he’s been thrown out of his job …

And that stage two of the plan to destroy E Corp is still going ahead.

On top of that?   He finds out that Darlene (Carly Chaikin) is working for the FBI, and with Agent DiPierro (Grace Gummer).

That Angela (Portia Doubleday) is working with the Dark Army.

And that the rioters who’ve broken into E Corp’ New York HQ?

Are really distracting!

Episode 6 — eps3.5_kill-pr0cess.inc — confronted by Elliot at the end of Episode 5, Angela tells him nothing …

Although Elliot realises — without her help — that Tyrell (Martin Wallström) is still seriously involved with the plan to bring down E Corp … and with the Dark Army local head, Irving (Bobby Canavale.)

The situation only gets worse: when Elliot realises he needs to get to the E Corp vault the Army are planning to blow up.

And make sure they don’t.

The only way to that?   Is to make damn sure Mr Robot (Christian Slater) gets helpful.

Something Elliot’s alter ego isn’t convinced he wants to do …

Now … good … ?

Hell, yes!

These two Sam Esmail directed episodes are as gorgeous looking as the rest: and have a seriously edgy feel.

They’ve ALSO have me wondering how much of a science fiction fan showrunner, Sam Esmail is.

At one point?   At one point in Episode Five, Elliot (Rami Malek) is trying to hack into a co-worker’s computer: when the name ‘Frank Bowman’ crops up.

Frankly?

I’m wondering if that’s a reference to Frank Poole and Dave Bowman, two astronauts in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.   Famously, a film that hinges on a computer breakdown*.

Again in episode five?   Angela (Postia Doubleday) is given a job by her mysterious handler, Irvine.

Whilst the rioters rampage through the building, she has to get to a specific room, transfer data (a lot of back ups) to a hard drive, and get out again.   (The riot is a distraction organised by her boss.)

Ever read Neuromancer, by William Gibson?

At one stage, the heroine has to break into a corporate HQ — under cover of a staged terrorist attack indistinguishable from a riot — get to a certain room, get a lot of extremely portable data — an AI system modelled on a dead programmer, in this case, on a portable ROM cartridge — and get out, unscathed.

Can anyone say Panther Moderns?

I know I can.

And frankly?

I don’t care if it is?

For me, it’s fun speculation: that only enriches a fun pair of episode.

Coming back for more?

You betcha!

*        The computer in question is the ship’s HAL 9000: it basically goes mad.   In more technical terms?   HAL’s basic programming order it to accurately process information: and pass it along.   For the mission to Jupiter/Saturn — the destination differs depending on whether you’re reading the book or watching the film —  HAL is order to NOT tell Frank and Dave about the mission’s true purpose.   HAL goes mad and kills the crew … because of a programming conflict.
