Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 16th April, 2021

16th April, 2021.

It’s Friday.

Which means … well … stuff’s happening.

Frankly, I’m planning on doing more job hunting: and more things for Nik Nak’s Old Peculiar.

Equally as frankly?   I’m planning on a little shopping.

I’m out of tomatoes: and need a loaf.

And possibly some pasta!

I’ve a couple more pots of spaghetti sauce to use up.

~≈🍝≈~

I do know I was in Romford, yesterday: selling on some blu-rays and DVDs, to their branch of CeX.

Brentwood’s closure makes doing that a bit more of a trip!

At ANY rate?   I’ve sold off some discs that I’d built up over lock down: having made back ups, first.

I’ve still got a couple of bits to sell: an internal hard drive, and a blu-ray burner.

CeX usually tests hardware, before it buys it from you.   Which would’ve taken a bit too long for my comfort.

I might just grab a photo of the things, and put them on Facebook Marketplace: or Gumtree.

We’ll have to see.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum†, Debbi‡ and Edith^ putting in their answers: with Olga, Debbi and Mum scoring five out of five, and Edith on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        16th April, 2001, saw the start of a border conflict between India and where: Bangladesh, Pakistan or China?

Q2)        The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written: on 16th April, 1963.   By whom: Dr Martin Luther King Jr, Martin Luther or Malcolm X?

Q3)        16th April, 1890, saw the birth of cricketer, Fred Root.   He also worked as a cricket referee. What’s the usual term for a cricket ref: umpire, judge or linesman?.

Q4)        Actor, Peter Ustinov, was born on 16th April, 1921.   Who did he play in Death on the Nile: Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot or Lord Peter Wimsey?

Q5)        Finally … ?   16th April is the Feast day of Saint Drogo.   He’s not the patron of whom: the deaf, blind or mute?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        15th April, 1989, saw people killed at the Hillsborough Stadium disaster.   How many people died on the day: ninety-two, ninety-four or ninety-six?
A1)        Ninety-four.

Q2)        The match being played was a FA Cup what: final, semi-final or quarter-final?
A2)        Semi-final.

Q3)        The match was between Nottingham Forest, and whom: Liverpool FC, Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur?
A3)        Liverpool FC.

Q4)        Which national newspaper has been boycotted for years, as a result of blaming fans for the disaster: The Sun, The Daily Mail or The Dunny-on-the-Wold Pig Fertilisers Gazette?
A4)        The Sun.

Q5)        Finally … ?   How many people died as a result of the disaster: ninety-two, ninety-four or ninety-six?
A5)        Ninety-six.
Here’s a thought …
“For ten years Caesar ruled with an iron hand. Then with a wooden foot, and finally with a piece of string.”
Episode Season 7, Episode 21, of The Goon Show: penned by Spike Milligan, 16 April 1918 – 27 February 2002.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Feel free to share today’s video Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        I had meant to ask how Jordi and Little Anna were doing, Olga: that’s a weird bit of synchronicity!   apart from being temporary cancelled, how ARE their lessons doing?
Ummm …
And the (old) editor’s decided to teach Catalan?   It may be a change, Olga, and I don’t like them, either, sometimes!   But I’m willing to bet he’s heard you talk about teaching, and thought “That’s an idea …”

†        Hello, Mum!

‡        There’s still quite a few pen and paper RPGs around, Debbiª: I’m still following the old Tunnels and Trolls team on Twitter.   They, and Dungeons and Dragons, have managed to keep the rights under one company.   And I’ve still got my Traveller rulebooks.

^        Yep: I’m looking forward to see if they’re still interested, Edithª: here’s hoping.   And it’s nice to know the walls are done.   But be careful if the sidewalk’s still wet: I’d hate to see you go end over end!

ª        Oh, I’ve got Tom Baker’s first series as the Doctor, ripping as we speak.   I managed to pick that, up, after seeing the Season 8 set.   The extras look promising.

Q1) Bangladesh

Q2) Dr Martin Luther King Jr

Q3) Umpire

Q4) Hercule Poirot

Q5) Most places list both, the deaf and the dumb, but using dumb to refer to mute is seen as offensive nowadays because of other connotations and meanings, so not sure what to make of this. The deaf?
Thanks, Paul. We're still waiting on some results, but Anna is doing reasonably well, although she has a lot of exams coming up and when she's tired her performance drops a lot (it happens to all of us). On the other hand, she has become a bit less awkward and friendlier in general terms, so perhaps it just takes her a while to warm up to people. Jordi loves lists and wants to know everything about everything, so that makes progress a bit slow. (He wants to run before he can walk, kind of situation). He insists he prefers to learn long lists of words, expressions, etc., although the evidence is that he does not remember some of the basics we've gone over several times already, so I'm trying to keep him on track. He is a good conversationalist, though, and has plenty to talk about (although not in English).
Ramon, the editor, told me he had done some teaching before, on a one-to-one basis, but it seems that there are teaching places in government schools coming up and his degree in Journalism would be a bonus (I know it is possible to achieve a postgraduate qualification in teaching doing a conversion course, depending on what your original degree is, but I'm not sure if he's done that or perhaps plans to do it in the future, as it involves placement in schools, etc). He was only working at the radio in the afternoons and was doing a Masters related to journalism, but it all went a bit awry with COVID-19 and the like. I guess you might be right, and I might have put the idea in his mind.
Good luck with your shopping and I hope you find a good option for your items as well.
