Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 8-5-2025 — VE Day

8th May, 2025: VE Day.

Yes: it’s officially Thursday.

And, frankly?

I’m expecting to be bored witless!

Bar picking up some medications, that is!

Heigh … … ho … !

~≈Ω≈~

Did I mention I’ve woken up with an earworm … ?

I’ve woken up with an earworm: Moloko’s “Forever More”.

Why … ?

I don’t know.

But both song, and video, are hypnotic.

~≈♬≈~

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga†, Irene‡ and Debbi§ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s five question set, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        8th May is VE Day.   It marks the end of World War Two, where: Europe, Eurasia or Africa?

Q2)        It marks the surrender of whom, coming into effect: Germany, Japan or Italy?

Q3)        It marks the surrender coming into effect on 8th May: of which year of the 1940s?

Q4)        In the UK, VE Day will be marked with a national service, where: Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey or Saint Trillo’s Church in Rhos-on-Sea?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Russia will be marking VE Day on which date of 2025: 8th May, 9th May or 10th May?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        7th May is the feast day of Saint Agathius of Byzantium.   He’s a patron saint of whom: soldiers, sailors or spies?
A1)        Soldiers.

Q2)        More to the point, Byzantium is now known as which city?
A2)        Istambul.

Q3)        7th May is Defender of the Fatherland Day.   Where: Estonia, Georgia or Kazakhstan?
A3)        Kazakhstan.

Q4)        The RMS Lusitania was sunk on 7th May, 1915.   During which World War?
A4)        World War One.   (RMS stands for Royal Mail Ship.)

Q5)        Finally … ?   World War Two partially ended: on 7th May, 1945.   When which country surrendered: Germany, Italy or Japan?
A5)        Germany.   (As you’re aware, VE Day is marked on the 8th May: as that’s when Churchill made the official announcement.)
Here’s a thought …
“Several countries observe public holidays on the day each year, also called Victory Over Fascism Day, Liberation Day, or Victory Day.”
From the Wikipedia entry on VE Day.
And a newsreel …

The next ten question set will be on 15th May: it’s about Mike Oldfield.

Your answers will be published tomorrow morning.

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!   (Have you uploaded the street party photos to Facebook, Mum?)

†        That queue must have been something to see, Olga¶!   The Lord of the Rings has passionate fans: and equally passionate cosplayers.   I’d love to be able to go in costume — I’m the right height for a dwarf, but too tall for a hobbit! — but wouldn’t have the patience to make the costume.
Oh, and The Rocky Horror Show is quite the thing to catch: last time I went, Anthony Stewart Head — the coffee ad chap? Giles from Buffy?— was playing Frank N Furter: he’s got the legs for fishnets.

Morning, Irene: how IS the day … ?

§        Perry Mason, Debbi: or The Three Investigators!   I had a copy of The Mystery of the Silver Spider, somewhere!   (There used to sell them in a bookshop on Ongar Road: that’s now a tattooist … I think!)

If I’ve understood Tolkien’s universe correctly, Olga?   The dwarves are supposed to have an average height of around 5’.   The hobbits, by contrast, are about 3’6” to 4’.   Elves were supposed to be about 6’ to 7’: and referred to the dwarves as Naugrim, the ‘stunted ones’.   (I think the plural of naugrim is naugrimir, but can’t find a reference for that.)

Q1) Europe

Q2) Germany

Q3) 1945

Q4) Westminster Abbey

Q5) 9th May
Elves always look very tall, graceful, and "white", as least the representations I've seen. Mind you, I've never read one of the books, although I have friends who are big fans.
I saw your mention of the Three Investigators and I remember the books with fondness, although I don't think there were very many, at least available in translation here.
