Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 23rd September 2025.

23rd September, 2025.

Phew: that’s gone!

I’m diabetic, if you didn’t know.

So I have a once a week injection of Mounjaro: and have to test my blood sugar levels at least twice a day.

So have what’s called a ‘sharps bin’: a small plastic bin that I put waste needles in.

The local council collects them: after I fill in an online form.

That collection was due, this morning: and would’ve stopped, collected the bin, and moved on.

Assuming I’d put it out last night.

I know what you’re thinking: you’re thinking “Did you put the bin out, Paul???????”

Did you, Paul?”

Yes, I did, actually!

At 5:30, this morning.

Thing was picked up at 6:30: I hear the lorry, while I was prepping up this post.

Thanks heavens for that.

The suspense was killing me!

Hmmm …

As a minor point … ?

I’ve recently upgraded from macOS Sequoia to macOS Tahoe.

And … ?

The new games app — that’s supposed to make access to games on a Mac, easier — doesn’t.

Or, at least, can’t or won’t access the two open source games I have on my machine.

There’s possibly a mix of things doing that: probably both Apple and the games’ developers are at fault, there.

But that’s inconvenient.

There’s also the new Apps app: which replaced Launchpad.

That’s still taking some getting used to.

Frankly?

I’d’ve been happier if Apple had kept that.

Apparently?

The US president’s most recent announcement tells pregnant American women to avoid Tylenol: what’s called paracetamol in the UK.

As — he says — it can cause autism.

There’s very little scientific evidence to back that up.

Given the amount of twaddle the president, and others, have peddled, twaddle about vaccinations, COVID-19, and lord knows what else … ?

I feel the president is unwise.

But I knew that, anyway …

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        23rd September is the feast day of Pope Linus.   He’s seen as which of the Catholic Church’s popes: the second, third or fourth?

Q2)        The Battle of Haifa was fought: on 23rd September, 1918.   The Haifa in question is where: Israel, Lebanon or Yemen?

Q3)        A General Election was held in Argentina: on 23rd September, 1973.   Who becomes president of Argentina, as a result?

Q4)        Musician, Ray Charles, was born on 23rd September, 1900.   He played what: guitar, piano or trumpet?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Steve Redgrave won his fifth Olympic gold medal: on 23rd September, 2000.   In which sport: shot-putt, rowing or skiing?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        Stratford Johns was born on 22nd September, 1925.   He played Detective Inspector Charlie Barlow in which series: Life on Mars, Z-Cars or Juliet Bravo?
A1)        Z-Cars. Johns appeared in several of the sequels, as well.

Q2)        In the northern hemisphere, 22nd September, 2025, is the autumn equinox.   It means what: that the day is longer, the night is longer, or that they’re roughly equal?
A2)        They’re roughly equal.

Q3)        22nd September is World Rhino Day.   ‘Rhino’ is short for what: rhinoplasty, rhinoceros or rhinologist?
A3)        Rhinoceros.   (There’s possibly a set, there.)

Q4)        Eight people were hanged on 22nd September, 1692.   As part of what: the Salem Witch Trials, the Barbery Crusades or the Scopes Trial?
A4)        The Salem Witch Trials.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Copies of the Dead Sea Scroll went on display on 22nd September, 1991.   In a museum in which US state?
A5)        California.
Here’s a thought …

“Before I begin, let me say right here and now that I’m a country boy. And, man, I mean the real backwoods!”
Ray Charles, September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004.
And a song …

The next ten question set is on Friday, and about T. S. Eliot.

Your comments will be published, tomorrow morning.

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        I think I’m in recovery, Olga§.   Hopefully, my guts will have finally calmed down by the time I have to go to town.
        I think I’ve seen that astronaut … !
I know what you mean about chicken.   I used to work in the local branch of KFC: on the front desk, I should add.   But we all got training in the basics.   And there’s that old trick I believe Delia Smith first highlighted.   You can check if chicken’s cooked properly by pricking it with a fork or skewer: if the juices that come out are clear, it’s cooked.
I wish I’d thought of that on Sunday!
Oh, the old ‘little and often’ trick: yes, I should do that myself.   Although I don’t envy you your situation …

        Hello, Mum§!

It hopefully won’t get you shot, Debbi§!   But yes, ‘idiot’ is putting it politely.   Just remind me not to mention painkillers!

§        I’ve got an earworm … !

I am pleased to hear you're feeling better. I am sure chicken can be cooked in the airfryer, although I don't have one and haven't learned how to use it. (They do the Spanish version of Masterchef here on the telly, and one of the things they got the celebrities to do was cook something on the air fryer, and most of them did very badly).
Tomorrow is la Mercé and I've put my name down for the Fitness Party they do every year, where they do a free fitness class, open air, and they give everybody who takes part a T-shirt. The weather forecast isn't great, but... It is always fun.
I have also booked a class/workshop, organised by the local government (Town Hall) to support carers, on Saturday morning. It's supposed to be about resilience and ways to improve our mental health, so I'll see what they say there. I hope for some tricks, because some days it can be quite hard.
