The Daily Teaser — 9-3-2015: Strike It Rich

Ooooh …

THAT’S something to look forward to!

You know — or possibly don’t — that it was my birthday, last week?

It was: I’m officially another year older.

And have an extra birthday present.   Bless, my mother got a huge thank you: as she’d managed to dig me up a DVD copy of the Benedict Cumberbatch film, The Imitation Game.

It’s about Alan Turing, in case you didn’t know: who’s fascinated me for years.

As did his work at Bletchley Park, during the war.

Frankly?

Frankly, I’m working, tonight.

Hopefully?

I’ll be glued to it, during the week …

But let’s get a move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: and scoring ten out of ten.

Let’s see how every does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) 9th March saw Gold discovered: in California.   In which year of the 1840s?
Q2) The strike was in what was called Rancho San Francisco.   Parts of the Rancho were in Ventura County, California.   Others are where: Kern County, Los Angeles County or Orange Country?
Q3) California’s famed Gold Rush was six years after this strike: and therefore in which year?
Q4) The gold was found after the man who originally found it — Francisco Lopez — dreamt about gold, whilst sleeping with his back to a tree.   What KIND of tree: an oak, pine or elm?
Q5) Finally … the owners of the Rancho found what, in 1936?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 8th March saw the original broadcast of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.   In which year of the 1970s?
A1) 1978.
Q2) On which BBC channel?
A2) BBC Radio 4.
Q3) Which author and humourist wrote the series?
Q4) Who played the show’s main character, Arthur Dent: in the radio series?
Q5) Who played the character, in the BBC TV version of the show?
A5) It’s that man again: Simon Jones.
Q6) The show’s other main character — voiced by actor Geoffrey McGivern  — was named after a car.   What was the character’s name?
A6) Ford Prefect†.
Q7) More to the point, Ford is a what, for the Guide?
A7) Researcher.   (According to Ford, ‘Teasers’ are the reason for UFO sightings, on Earth: they’re bored rich kids who find someone who’s unlikely to be believed, and strut up and down in front of them making ‘beep beep’ noises.   Whether I should be insulted, at this stage …)
Q8) What’s the connection between Sam Rockwell, and Mark Wing-Davey?
A8) They’ve both played Ford’s semi-cousin, Zaphod Beeblebrox.   (The third arm’s there to improve his ski-boxing.)
Q9) Sandra Dickinson, Zooey Deschanel and Susan Sheridan all played Trillian: in the various versions of the show.   What was Trillian called: before changing her name to Trillian?
A9) Tricia McMillan.   (Apparently, she has brown eyes: odd, considering.)
Q10) Finally … The Guide, itself, famously refers to Earth as ‘mostly …’ what?
A10) Harmless.
I’ll leave you with this piece of dwarf poetry
“Gold! Gold! Gold! Gold!”

Thomas Hood.
And this tune …

Have a good day.

*        I wish, Debbi!   (I think I’d run out of towels, after half a week!)

†        I’ve got to give mention to Mos Def, at this point.   I first saw him — WELL before the film came out — presenting a music award: and, of course, gangstering it up for the audience.   I had my doubts.   Then I saw him in the film.   Perfect bit of casting, frankly …
