A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night: Serious Art-house …

11th August, 2015.

You know, I do like seeing a film: every-so-often.

No, really: go hit the tag cloud at the bottom of the page, or click this link.

At any rate, I like watching the occasional film.

Not as many as I’d prefer, I think.   I work shifts: so, sometimes, there’s evenings I’m working.   And others when I’m either doing other things.

My point is, I like watching the odd film:  and I’ve not done that as often as I’d like, just recently.

Apart from the odd one or two, here and there.

And yes.

It’s either just me.

Or A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is … odd …

At any rate, I’ve had a free night, tonight.

A free night … and some left over credit in my iTunes account.

Enough to rent at least one film: maybe more, at some point.

The film I ended up renting … ?   Was the 2014 released, Ana Lily Amirpour directorial debut, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night.

And calling it odd is possibly doing it down.

Let’s call it art-house, shall we?   And go from there …

Set in a fiction Iranian city called ‘Bad City,’ A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night follows Arash (Arash Marandi) as he goes about his life: mostly buying heroin for his father, and trying to NOT pay money to local dealer, Saeed, played by Dominic Rains.

There’s something ELSE going on, though.

The un-named girl of the title, played by Sheila Vand.

Who … appears to Saeed, early on in the film.

Appears … and seemingly vanishes, when Saeed looks in his rear-view mirror.

The fact that doesn’t register with Saeed?   Is only justice: especially when he takes the Girl home, later: thinking to have his wicked way with her.

It’s only then when he realises quite what she is … and how peckish she’s feeling …

Now … Odd … ?

And art house … ?

I’ll be frank, I don’t know if either term is entirely appropriate.

However?

I’m pretty certain I’ve seen something, tonight, that may be good or bad: or genius, stunning, wonderful, jaw-dropping, what have you.

But I DO think I’ve seen a low-budget film that is certainly interesting: and one I think is worth catching.

After all, there’s not THAT many Iranian-American films out there.

Nor are there many films whose main character is a chador-wearing, skateboard riding, vampire.

Personally?  A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night might well be odd.

Is certainly — I think — arty.

It’s worth 101 minutes of your time, I feel.

If Ana Lily Aminpour produces more like this?

It could well be the first steps in a long career.   A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is certainly an interesting debut …
