The Daily Teaser — 27-8-2015: The Rainbow Bridge

For me, payday is tomorrow.   And there’s a few things I want to buy.

I have my eyes on a little set-top box that I can ad to my TV: to let me watch high definition TV channels.

There’s a ton of other things, too.

There’s something else, as well: as you can possibly guess.

I’m a long term fan of the late Sir Terry Pratchett: having read his work since the mid-1980s, when I first came across The Colour of Magic.

As you can imagine, his diagnosis with Alzheimer’s Disease was something I found upsetting: especially as it a condition my grandmother suffered with.

His death was equally upsetting.

I’m also VERY aware of something else.

Last night saw the UK release of his last book: The Shepard’s Crown.

Something I’m both looking forward to — it’s a Discworld novel, after all — and dreading ordering.

And reading.

Sir Terry, himself, said — in Going Postal — that someone only died when his name stopped being spoken.

I’m very aware there are moves afoot to make sure of that.

But there’s a reason I’m dreading buying The Shepard’s Crown.

It means I know for certain that an old friend has died … … …

But let’s move on to slightly more cheerful areas, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: and scoring six out of six.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) 27th August saw the completion of the Rainbow Bridge.   The bridge is in which Asian nation?
Q2) The bridge is in that country’s capital city.   What’s the name of that city?
Q3) The bridge was completed in which year of the 1990s: 1991, 1993 or 1995?
Q4) This Rainbow Bridge is the only one of that name in its country.   How many Rainbow Bridges are there in the USA?
Q5) Name any of the US states those bridges are in.
Q6) Which English University city has a Rainbow Bridge: Brighton, Cambridge or Oxford?
Q7) In Norse mythology, the Rainbow Bridge goes from Midgard, the human world, to Asgard, the realm of the Gods.   What’s that bridge called: Bifrost, Yggdrasil or Ragnarok?
Q8) Who — in 1971 — released an album called Rainbow Bridge: roughly a year after his death?
Q9) Rainbow Bridge was also an episode of which US comedy series: M*A*S*H, Seinfeld or Friends?
Q10) Finally … Rainbow Bridge is also a 1963, Japanese cartoon film.   What name is given to this kind of film: anime or manga?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 26th August, 1997, was the date of the Beni Ali Massacre: in which North African country?
A1) Algeria.
Q2) 26th August saw Sigmund Jähn become the first German in space: when he was part of a Soviet mission launched that day.   In which year of the 1970s?
A2) 1978.
Q3) More to the point, what term would be used to describe him: a cosmonaut, astronaut or taikonaut?
A3) Cosmonaut.   It’s the Anglicised version of the Russian term, космонавт.   The term ‘taikonaut,’ is used by some English language media: it’s derived from taikong, the Chinese word for space, and ‘naut.’
Q4) 26th August, 1994, saw Arthur Cornhill become the first man in Britain to receive a battery powered, artificial, what?
A4) Heart.
Q5) The 787 Dreamliner received its official safety certification: on 26th August, 2011.   Which company makes the Dreamliner?
A5) Boeing.
Q6) Finally … 26th August, 1930, saw the death of Lon Chaney, Sr.   Who did he play, in the 1922 version of Oliver Twist?
A6) Fagin.

I’ll leave you with a final question …
“But which is the stone that supports the bridge?”

Kublai Khan.
And finally … ?   We’ll take it to the bridge …

Have a good day …

*        I’m looking forward to it, myself, Debbi.   Although dreading the day I finally order The Shepard’s Crown.   Remind me to show you Shaking Hands with Death, the Richard Dimbleby Lecture he gave a few years ago …
