The Daily Teaser — 3-8-2015

Oh, that’s something.

Remember, a few day’s ago, I told you about the plans for the waste ground at the end of Saint James Road: just around the corner from my place.

Something I’ve personally always opposed: as I’ve felt the emergency vehicle access to my street is hard enough as things stand.

Adding any more buildings would make such access much more difficult: certainly during the building, and afterwards, as well.

After all, the increased in parked cars will also add to congestion — and delay — to the area.

Since writing that piece?   I’ve been told by both local councillors — Councillor Karen Chilvers and Councillor William Russell — that the most recent application for that ground …

Had been turned down!

Now, I’ve also been told — by at least one of them — that permission for any building work is expected to go through on appeal.

But both councillors have told me the signs have gone up extremely prematurely.

What’s to be done about that … ?   I couldn’t tell you.

But I seriously hope that appeal gets turned down.

But let’s get a move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring six out of six.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) Which African nation gained its independence from France: on 3rd August, 1960?
Q2) 3rd August, 1977, saw the release of the TRS 80: by Tandy.   That generation of small, home computers were called what: mini computers, microcomputers or personal computers?
Q3) 3rd August, 1934, saw Adolf Hitler become German Führer: by merging two high political offices.   Name either of those offices.

Q4) 3rd August, 1852, saw Harvard University win the first Boat Race.   Which University were they racing against?
Q5) Finally … Which US submarine travel under the Arctic ice cap: on 3rd August, 1958?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 2nd August, 1939, saw Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard write to the President of the USA: urging him to build an atomic bomb.   Which President?
Q2) More to the point, the World War 2 project this kickstarted was called what?
A2) The Manhattan Project.
Q3) 2nd August, 1984, saw the European Court of Human Rights issue a ruling against what: closed circuit TV surveillance, phone tapping or satellite photography?
Q4) During the Meiji Restoration, 2nd August, 1869, saw Japan abolish the Shinokosho system.   Was that its Shogunate, class system or tax system?
A4) Its class system.
Q5) 2nd August, 1610, saw Henry Hudson reach what’s now called Hudson Bay.   He thought he’d discovered the Northwest Passage: to which ocean?
A5) The Pacific Ocean.
Q6) Finally … 2nd August, 1892, saw the birth of film producer, Jack Warner.   He, and his brother, Sam Warner, founded which Hollywood studio?
A6) Warner Brothers.   (Anyone putting down ‘Universal’ … ?   Can kick themselves …)
I’ll leave you with this tune from Tony Bennett …

And this thought …
“I don’t see why escapist literature should not also be a work of art.”
P. D. James, 3 August 1920 – 27 November 2014.
Have a good day … !

*        Oh, it bothers all right, Olga!   Like a lot of companies, my bosses take these shortages out of our wages!!   If the till’s up, of course, the reverse ISN’T true: they don’t put it back in!   But in all honesty, while that’s inconvenient, that’s not really an issue: it’s enough of an industry standard, as I’ve been in this sort of job for a while, that it doesn’t bother me much.   The thing that gets me is the fact that the flaw — I think — comes from the simple fact the till‡ froze on me: everything follows from that.   That, and yes: not knowing where that £20 shortfall comes form, exactly, does twang.   It’s like losing a tooth: our tongues are going to keep going  back to that gap.

†        Hello, Debbi! :D   And my WORD, but we’re having an interesting little natter with young Steve, there … !   I THINK we’re going to give 601 a run for the intellectual money …

‡        As Debbi will tell you, Olga, I’m really not a one for PCs.   Give me a Mac, and I know what I’m doing … !
