The Daily Teaser — 4-8-2015

You know, I like a good TV documentary, sometimes.

Well, BBC4 does knock out a good one, sometimes.

And, occasionally, will have them playing in the background as I post up the Teasers.

The reason I mention this … ?   Is simply that I have one on, as I write.

One BBC 4 aired, last night: about the WW2 operation that was Operation Mincemeat.

Just in case you didn’t know?   Mincemeat was an operation jointly organised by MI5, and an officer from the Royal Navy’s intelligence section: to convince the German High command that the Allies were going to invade Greece, rather than the obvious choice, Sicily.

By planting fake papers on a corpse, when making sure the corpse washed up where the Germans would find, or access, them.

The plan worked.

And the Allies went on to win the war.

But I tell you what …

You couldn’t make it up, could you?   Until you find out that, in 1950, someone wrote a spy novel, called Operation Heartbreak, about a fictional equivalent of the events.

Like I say … !

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting her answers: and scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How toLicense and video …

Q1) Which Duchy joined the Kingdom of France, on the 4th August, 1532: the Duchy of Brittany, Normandy or Aquitaine?
Q2) 4th August, 1704, saw an Anglo-Dutch fleet capture which territory: Gibraltar, Montserrat or the Pitcairn Islands?
Q3) 4th August, 2007, saw NASA lunch its Phoenix spacecraft.   Which planet was the craft heading for?
Q4) 4th August, 1995, saw the start of Operation Storm: the last — and decisive — battle in which country’s War of Independence?
Q5) Finally … 4th August, 2005, saw Prime Minister Paul Martin announced that Michaëlle Jean would be the 27th Governor General: of which Commonwealth country?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) Which African nation gained its independence from France: on 3rd August, 1960?
A1) Niger.
Q2) 3rd August, 1977, saw the release of the TRS 80: by Tandy.   That generation of small, home computers were called what: mini computers, microcomputers or personal computers?
Q3) 3rd August, 1934, saw Adolf Hitler become German Führer: by merging two high political offices.   Name either of those offices.
A3) German President or German Chancellor.
Q4) 3rd August, 1852, saw Harvard University win the first Boat Race.   Which University were they racing against?
A4) Yale.
Q5) Finally … Which US submarine travel under the Arctic ice cap: on 3rd August, 1958?
A5) The USS Nautilus.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“The wise want love; and those who love want wisdom.”

Fury, Act 1, I. 625-631, Prometheus, Unbound, Percy Bysshe Shelley, 4 August 1792 – 8 July 1822.
And this tune …

Enjoy your day …

*        Absolutely loved it, Debbi†.   Actually?   It’s probably worth posting it, here …

†        Actually, Debbi, I never had a Tandy: although Brentwood had a branch of Radio Shack!   I DID have a microcomputer: a Sinclair ZX Spectrum.   You can imagine how I feel about the ZX Spectrum Vega: I WANT!!!!!!!

And, yes, I saw the invite go past, Debbi: I’ve plonked myself down as a Maybe, as I’ve STILL got to check on my times, at work … !
