Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 7-3-2017

Hmmm …

Well, that’s Mr Robot season two acquired!

Handily … niftily …

And relatively cheaply.

And even ripped.

As you know, by now, my usual habit is to pick up a dvd or blu-ray, convert it into a form I can use one my AppleTV, and sell the original discs.

The trouble with that?

Is that SOME of the resulting Mr Robot rips.

Won’t play in Quicktime: but will on the AppleTV, vlc, and MPEGStreamclip.

Why?

I’m blowed if I know: although I suspect it’s something to do with the attempts I’ve made to rip the subtitles.

I’ll HAVE to experiment with the rips: and let you know.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five in the process.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video

Q1) Antonius Pius died on 7th March 161 AD: to be replaced as Caesar by his sons.   One was Lucius Verus.   Who was the other?
Q2) 7th March, 2007, saw the House of Commons vote to make the House of Lords, 100% what: appointed, elected or chocolate flavoured?
Q3) Golda Meir was named as Israeli Prime Minister, on 7th March, 1969.   Which cabinet position had she previously held: Foreign Minister, Treasury Minister or Justice Minister?
Q4) 7th March, 1900, saw the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Große become the first ship to send what to shore: a wireless signal, a life boat or email?
Q5) Finally … Kanyama Chiume fled to the UK: on 7th March, 1959.   He was an activist leader in which African nation: Nyasaland, Sierra Leone or Swaziland?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 6th March, 1991, saw researchers discover the Michelangelo computer virus.   Researchers in which country?
A1) Australia.
Q2) The Herald of Free Enterprise capsized on 6th March, 1987.   The ferry was just outside which Belgian port?
A2) Zeebrugge.   (As far as I can recall?   It’s pronounced zee-BRU-ger.)
Q3) 6th March, 1340, saw the birth of John of Gaunt.   John was a major figure in which English dynasty: the House of Gaunt, Tudor or Plantagenet?
A3) Plantagenet.
Q4) 6th March, 1882, saw the kingdom of Serbia proclaimed.   What is modern day Serbia: a kingdom, a theocracy or a republic?
A4) A republic.
Q5) Finally … 6th March, 1902, saw the founding of which football club: Real Madrid, Manchester United or Bayern Munich?
A5) Real Madrid.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“… it is the interpretation of God’s great book of nature, and not the men who interpret these pages, that are the ultimate objects of all this praise.”
John Herschel, 7 March 1792 – 11 May 1871.
And a song …

Have a nice day … !

*        I am SO tempted to sell you a Mac, Olga‡, I really am!   I know there’s a lot of movies made on Macs, using either Final Cut Pro — which Debbi uses for her videos — or Avid.   I tend to use iMovie for my basic needs!   But you might not want to use a sledge-hammer to crack a nut!   (Hang on, I see where I’ve gone wrong with that question: you’re right, it was discovered in February.   The name comes from the fact it got triggers on 6th March:  the artist’s birthday.   It first triggered in 1992.)

†        You know, that’s possibly a good idea, Debbi‡!   People at work keep asking is I do dj’ing, as the think my voice is pleasant.   I think I’d run out of breath!   I think Terry Nation took some inspiration from the historical Nazis: he was a bit left wing, and saw the Nazis as his default villain.   It gets a bit obvious in Dalek Invasion of Earth.   (It’s like I said, when you and Rick were over: British SF villains are invading Nazis.   US ones, like the Borg?   Are invading Commies!)

‡        Pointless trivia for you both.   Spanish artist, Carlos Ezquerra, lifted some of the imagery for Judge Dredd from Death Race 2000: and from growing up in nationalist Spain, as a youngster.   (One up for Spain: Dredd’s one of the science fiction characters.)

Q1) Marcus Aurelius
Q2) Elected (I like the sound of chocolate flavoured)
Q3) Foreign Minister
Q4) A wireless signal
Q5) Nyasaland
For a moment I though I'd completely misplaced a whole African country.
Apart from the money side of it (and the fact that my cousin always gives me hand if I need any upgrades or repairs in my computer and he has zero experience or interest in Macs) I think my brain is too taxed already to try and relearn a new system (the only time I tried, many years back, when I was much younger, I didn't get it.) I also think you're right about the size of the weaponry. For many years I only used my computer as a glorified typewriter, and that's still what I mostly use it for...

I find Nazis a bit more villainous than Communists, even though the Commies have their own bloody (as in blood, not a swear word :)) history. But then, so does the U.S., right? :)
