Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 16-2-2018: Dead and Buried*.

16th February, 2018.

No, really … my phone’s a right royal pain in the proverbial bum … !

Right at the moment?

My phone’s dead time, yesterday?

Seems to be down to an ageing battery: and a dodgy cable: one I hadn’t noticed was damaged.

Replacing the battery looks cheap enough: at least, going by the prices on Amazon.

Replacing the cable?

Will, for now, be  cheaper.   I can get that in my local CeX: as they do a range of reasonable replacement cables.

On the other hand … ?

I spent an instructive hour or so in Brentwood High Street: going from mobile shop to mobile shop, double checking on their offerings.

Carphone Warehouse are offering a good deal: and O2 are offering to — effectively — match their price, AND transfer over my contacts, number and remaining balance.

What IS a boy to do?!

~≈§≈~

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s saw Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with both scoring seven out of seven.

Let’s see how they — and you — do with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 16th February saw Howard Carter open whose burial chamber?
Q2) In which year: 1921, 1922 or 1923?
Q3) The chamber — technically part of the tomb designated KV62 — was in the Valley of the … whom?
Q4) The tomb’s occupant was a ruler of ancient where?
Q5) Those rulers were which ‘P’?
Q6) The chamber is the only part of the tomb that’s what: cursed, decorated or plastic?
Q7) A statue of Anubis was found in the tomb.   Anubis was an ancient god: with the body of a man and the head of a … what?
Q8) That god was associated with the way the tomb’s occupant was preserved.   That process was called what?
Q9) According to news in 2015, archeologists have evidence of what, hidden in the tomb.   Of hidden what: chambers, frescos or cats?
Q10) Finally … ?   The body was wearing a famous golden death mask.   That mask is now in a museum in which city?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 15th February, 1883, saw the birth of writer, Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward.   What was his better known pen-name?
Q2) More to the point, what character was Ward’s best known literary creation?
A2) Fu Manchu.
Q3) 15th February, 1874, saw the birth of which Arctic explorer?
Q4) 15th February, 1971, saw the UK introduce the decimal version of its coinage.   Which current UK coin has the most edges?
A4) The new £1 coin, with twelve sides.   (50p and 20p pieces has seven sides: all the rest are circular)
Q5) 15th February, 1989, saw Soviet troops pull out of where?
Q6) What’s that country’s capital city?
A6) Kabul.
Q7) Finally … 15th February is ENIAC Day: marking the world’s first general purpose, digital computer.   It’s marked … in which US city?
A7) Philadelphia.   (I don’t know if there’s a parade or anything, but I think we’re obliged to dress up …)
Here’s a quote …
“At first I could see nothing, the hot air escaping from the chamber causing the candle flame to flicker, but presently, as my eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues, and gold - everywhere the glint of gold.”
Howard Carter, on the Burial chamber’s opening.
And a video …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        I last covered this subject back in 2012, in the Teaser for 4th November.   That was the day in 1922 that Carter opened the tomb.   As I’m sure you’ll have realised, the burial chamber we’re discussing, is inside the Tomb: and took a few months of studious and slow digging to get to it.

†        Actually, that’s somewhere I didn’t look, Olga: the local branch of Game.   I don’t know how much I’d get in trade in for mine, though, which is where they and CeX come in handy: and I don’t think any new one I’d get there, would take my SIM card, it’s one of the original size.   O2, at least, I’d be able to transfer my number to a new card.   We’ll see.   (There’s always that ONE possible Valentine’s Day target, isn’t there … ?)

‡        I know exactly where you’re coming from, there, Debbi!   Even working, I have to be careful!   Here’s going a huge lottery win comes your way!   (We’ll have to see about The Italian Job, Debbi.   Hmmm … Have you got access to DVD authoring software?   Might come in handy … )   They worked on ENIAC … ?   Wow … !

The size of the SIM card doesn't matter. I had the same problem, and whichever company you are with will change it for free. And you can keep your number. You just need to get in touch with the company (if you change, if you don't, that's not an issue) and they'll give you the information you need. But the new company will explain. It is pretty straightforward. I changed to BT because I don't use my phone very much and as I have my landline and the internet contracted with them they offered me half price (£5 per month). Of course, deals including a phone work differently, but I wasn't that bothered. Remember that supermarkets also do mobile phones, in case you are curious about their deals. (I was with O2 before and when they phoned me to ask about the new deal I was on, they didn't offer to match it, so I assume it is much cheaper than theirs). I had been with O2 for a long time, and they are a Spanish company... I wonder. Good luck.
