Penny Dreadful: City of Angels — Series 1 Episode 8 — Hide and Seek — A Review

14th June, 2020.

Right …

It’s hot, sweaty … and decidedly uncomfortable.

Uncomfortable enough that you don’t want to know what I’m wearing.

Really!

Either way, it made me bad tempered enough that, whilst writing this morning’s Daily Teaser?

I managed to not be able to upload a video intro straight into the post … and had to upload it to YouTube, and embed it from there.

It turns out I just needed to clear my caches

I could kick myself …

Except I’d possibly miss …

At ANY rate … ?

I’ve seen episode 8, of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, series one.

With two more episodes to go?   Episode eight is setting the bar …

Episode 8 — Hide and Seek — opens with the by now traditional summary of last week’s episode.

Then moves: showing us Dr Craft’s young son, Trevor (Hudson West) burying his pet hamster: telling only Maria (Adriana Barraza) that it’s been killed … by Elsa’s (Natalie Dormer) son Frank (Santino Barnard).

Maria give Trevor a coyote symbol: advise that the fetish will help protect him.

Detectives Tiago Vega and Lewis Michener (Daniel Zovatto and Nathan Lane) agree to split up and follow separate leads in a potential corruption case.

Tiago?   Is to investigate Sister Molly’s mother, Ms Adelaide (Amy Madigan).   Adelaide is very aware of Tiago’s relationship with her daughter, Molly (Kerry Bishé): and shocks Tiago by showing him his sister, Josefina’s (Jessica Garza) baptism into the church.

Whilst’s Detective Michener heads for Councilman Townsend’s (Michael Gladis) office.

The meeting start’s late … as, before it the Councillor has an uneasy confrontation with Councillor Beck: who hints heavily that she knows about his sex life: something that frightens Townsend enough that — on a date in a hidden bar — he asks Kurt to kill Councillor Beck.

Michener … ?   Michener comes away unsatisfied with the Councillor … but has an interesting conversation with Alex (Natalie Dormer), the Councillor’s aid …

On other fronts … ?

On other fronts, Maria has learnt of Josefina’s wish to join the Temple: only to find Elsa telling her not to talk to Mexicans on the street.

And the meal Elsa and Dr Craft (Rory Kinnear) attend?   Sees the Doctor butting heads with Herman Ackermann (Star Trek Discovery’s Ethan Peck.) … over exactly what makes a good German …

Something that causes a long discussion between Elsa and Dr Craft, on the way home … and sees the good Doctor … ?

Telling Elsa the truth about his family name … …
“Save ’er?   Pal, we’re just trying to survive her!”
Detective Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane.)

Now …

You’ve possibly worked out I’m enjoying this series.

Especially if you’ve read, or watched, my earlier reviews.

“Paul,” I hear you say, “is episode eight, is Hide and Seek, another bloody good episode of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels?”

Yes it is, thanking you!

For a start, Natalie’s Dormer’s hard work is starting to show.   Elsa is starting to show her nasty side: targeting Maria with Elsa’s Nazi sympathies, provoking Maria still further through her devilish son, Frank: in truth, an aspect of Elsa, herself … and finally, trying to force Maria out of the Craft household with hallucinations of Maria’s long dead husband.

That’s mild …

Dormer as Else also has her sights on Dr Peter Craft … or Krupp, as her turns out to be …

Dormer as Alex … ?   Watching her with Lane, as Michener … ?

You can see Michener doesn’t trust Alex: but can’t put his finger on why.   You can see on his face, he’s thinking “OK, your Yiddish is good, I’ll trust you … for now … …

Which is the other pointy to raise: we known Lane, Zovatto, Bishé, et al, are a fantastic ensemble cast, a cast that’s not afraid of what the scrip asks of them.

And giving it their all in the process.

So, tonight … ?   We have seen after scene, after well played scene walking past.

With nice minor appearances from Piper Perabo as Linda Craft, and Patti Lupone*, as the singer in the bar.

With some of most riveting?  Featuring Dormer: or Adriana Barraza’s Maria, all offended pride and maternal care rolled into one.

With acting, writing, directing, and yes, a score, like this?

I’m coming back next week … !

*        Patti appeared as the extremely formidable Cut Wife, in the second season of Penny Dreadful: and also played Dr Seward in the third series.
I can’t help but think if anyone was the person to play Granny Weatherwax?   It’s Patti LuPone …
