Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 16-7-2021: The Test

16th July, 2021.

Yep: it’s another Friday, and another Zoom meeting.

For the over-fifties training course I’m on.

It’s … going well, I think: although I’ still need to sign up for one more of the basic online courses they offer.

There’s hoping I remember!

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Trevor*, Debbi† and Edith‡ and putting in their answers: with Trevor and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Edith on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        The USA’s first nuclear bomb test was part of the Manhattan Project, and took place on 16th July of which year of the 1940s?

Q2)        The test was code named what: Trinity, Tribeca or Trinidad?

Q3)        That code name was coined by which Manhattan Project scientist: Enrico Fermi, John von Neumann or J. Robert Oppenheimer?

Q4)        The device that was tested was nicknamed what: the device, gadget or widget?

Q5)        Finally … ?   The test bomb’s radioactive core was made from what: plutonium, uranium or thorium?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        15th July is Saint Swithun’s Day.   According to an old tradition, if it rains, today, it’ll keep raining for what: twenty, thirty or forty, days?
A1)        Forty Days.

Q2)        15th July is also the feast day of Saint Edith of Polesworth.   Poleworth is in which English county?
A2)        Warwickshire.

Q3)        Actor, Martin Landau, died on 15th July, 2017.   He played Commander John Koenig in which science fiction series: Fantastic Journey, Star Trek or Space: 1999?
A3)        Space: 1999.   I don’t remember much about the series: except that the Eagle spacecraft were gorgeous

Q4)        Mount Bandai erupted: on 15th July, 1888.   The volcano is in which Asian nation: China, Japan or South Korea?
A4)        Japan.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Ken Kercheval was born: on 15th July, 1935.   Who did he play in Dallas: Cliff Barnes, J. R. Ewing or Miss Ellie?
A5)        Cliff Barnes.
Here’s a thought …
“It was conducted by the United States Army at 5:29 a.m. on July 16, 1945, as part of the Manhattan Project.”
From the Wikipedia entry on the test.
And a clue …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Feel free to share today’s video Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        I think I’ve done a couple already, Trevor: you’ve possibly missed them …

†        That’s true, Debbi, there’s less of them.   Am I right in saying they’re bigger than the average US state?
You know, I don’t remember much about Space: 1999.   Except the theme was vaguely memorable.   And the Eagle spaceships were gorgeous!

‡        I only know It Hurt’s So Good, Edithª: but you’re right, it IS gorgeous!   You don’t get old fashioned soul, these days!
(Oh, I’ve just read the Wikipedia entry on an old tune called Soul Finger.   Apparently, the band were playing around with the tune from Mary Had a Little Lamb!   You can tell, if you listen to that trumpet riff at the start, can’t you?)

ª        Oh: there’s a show on BBC Radio 4 called Desert Island Discs, Edith.   The guest had just played Queen’s Love of my Life.   I think Freddie was on form, that day!

A1 1945
A2 Trinity
A3 J. Robert Oppenheimer
A4 The gadget
A5 plutonium

Not all Canadian provinces are large. Prince Edward Island is very small. A couple of the Territories are massive. The biggest is The Territory of Nunavut which is massive.

There is a legal difference between a Province and a Territory.

Nice snappy theme tune! :)

I don't think I ever watched the show.

1. 1945
2. Trinity (the inspiration for the character in The Matrix? :)
3. J. Robert Oppenheimer
4. gadget (that's some gadget!)
5. plutonium
