27th January, 2025: the Holocaust.
Yes: it’s officially official.
It’s Monday!
As the start of a whole new week, the start of a whole period that makes us another week older and wiser …
And a week where we’re allowed to make assorted ‘YAY’ noises.
Just maybe not that excited!
~≈🥳≈~
At any rate … ?
It’s a Monday.
And?
Excitable Yays* aside, it means it’s I’m off to my Weight Management meeting.
Hopefully?
I’d’ve lost weight.

Whilst writing this?
I’ve had Radio 4 on: early enough that the station’s Prayer for the Day played …
Obviously, today is Holocaust Memorial Day: so Rabbi Julia Neuberger was an appropriate choice of speaker.
With an interesting piece.
Strangely, though?
She referenced Helen Fry’s The Walls Have Ears: the book about the operation that bugged the cells of senior German prisoners-of-war.
The reason I found it strange?
Was simply the co-incidence: I’m currently reading the book, and it’s fascinating stuff …

Just as a last thought … ?
That photo is the one I’ve used as a thumbnail for today’s Teaser video.
Because it’s striking.
Because of the man in the centre of the photo, the man who’s carrying a friend, and staring at the camera.
His expression caught my eye.
It seems to say “You knew. You knew.”
Given the history?
The accusation is understandable …

Let’s move on.
Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum†, Olga‡ and Debbi§ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.
Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?
Q1) It’s Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK: marking the liberation of Auschwitz. In which year of the 1940s?Q2) The main camp was Auschwitz-I. Auschwitz-II was the extermination camp. It’s also remembered as Auschwitz what?Q3) The Holocaust was carried out by which German regime: the Nazis, Communists or Socialists?Q4) ‘The Holocaust’ is the name given events by the Jewish people the regime persecuted. Who referred to the killings as the ‘Porajmos’: Romani, Poles or Africans?Q5) Finally … ? The camp was liberated by troops from where: Britain, the USA or the Soviet Union?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 26th January is Australia Day. It marks the landing of the First … what?A1) First Fleet.Q2) That First thing came from where: the UN, UK or Great Britain?Q3) The first Australian landing was in Sydney Cove. Sydney Cove is in what’s now where: Sydney, Port Macquarie or Bendigo?A3) Sydney. (Bendigo’s inland!)Q4) Sydney Cove is in what’s now which state: New South Wales, Queensland or South Australia?A4) New South Wales.Q5) Finally … ? Tasmania is an Australian state. Is Tasmania an island: yes or no?A5) Yes.
Here’s a thought …
“They did not greet us, nor did they smile; they seemed oppressed not only by compassion but by a confused restraint, which sealed their lips and bound their eyes to the funereal scene.”Primo Levi, speaking of the troops who liberated he, and others, from Auschwitz.
And a documentary …
The next ten question set is on 29th January: it’s about Desert Island Discs.
Thank you for coming: have a good day.
* The Excitable Yays are a garage band from Droitwich …
† Hello, Mum … …
‡ Blu-rays do come in handy, Olga: as do DVDs. The last one of those I got was Breaking Glass: the UK version is only available as a DVD. I don’t know if that’s licensing causing an issue: or simply that the companies producing the blu-rays knew there was a difference.
§ You know, I hadn’t thought of that, Debbi: but you’re right. A paperback’s battery doesn’t run out, either. Saying that … ? An ex-girlfriend of mine found audio books handy. She had an IQ in the high 120s/low 130s … and severe dyslexia …

I have plenty of DVDs as well. When I was doing my PhD, not all the films I needed were available as DVDs. Some of them I only found them as VHS (and for one of them, which I only found as an American video, I had to found a videoplayer that played American videos... I doubt that it has ever become available in any other format, because I don't think it did very well commercially... But I haven't checked).
1 1945
2 Birkinau
3 Nazis
4 Poles
5 Soviet Union
Audiobooks are also being distributed in various ways. They can be bought through retailers or purchased from the.authors direct.
They can also streamed on Spotify, which is probably not going to earn an author a whole lot. :)

Why can't we all just get along? As someone once said. :)
