The Daily Teaser — 17-6-2015

Oh, well, that’s worked …

Did I tell you that I have a TV that’s capable of recording a show to a USB flash memory stick?

Handy that.

Especially when you consider I can then convert the recordings to a format playable on either Android or iOS devices.

Basically, I can use vlc to convert those recordings into a form that I can THEN rip with Handbrake.

The problem I’ve come across, recently?   Is that, when ripped, recordings from two of Britain’s commercial terrestrial stations — Channel 4 and Channel 5 — come complete with the descriptive audio for the blind.

As you may or may not know, I’m not blind.   So find that … inconvenient.

Until I realised, last night, that I should be kicking myself.

As it’s something I can filter out at the ripping stage: by picking the appropriate audio options with Handbrake.

D’oh … !

But let’s get moving on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: and scoring three out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 17th June, 1579, saw a British expedition claim Nova Albion for the English Crown.   The expedition was led by whom: Captain James Cook, Sir Francis Drake or Captain William Morgan?
Q2) 17th June, 1885, saw the Statue of Liberty finally arrive: in New York Harbour.   The Statue is on which island in New York Harbour?
Q3) During the US War of Independence, 17th June, 1775 was the date of the Battle of Bunker Hill.   The Battle place during a siege of which US city?
Q4) 17th June, 1985, saw the Space Shuttle Discovery launched on a mission: carrying Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as a payload specialist.   Sultan was the first what to go into space: practicing Jew, practicing Muslim or practicing Buddhist?
Q5) Finally, and during the American Indian Wars … 17th June, 1876 saw Cheyenne and Sioux forces force US Army forces into retreat: during the Battle of the Rosebud.   Which Lakota leader was in charge of the Sioux contingent?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 16th June, 1963, saw the Soviet Union launch the Vostok 6: complete with the first female cosmonaut to go into space.   What was her name?
A1) Lieutenant Valentina Tereshkova.
Q2) 16th June, 1816, saw Lord Byron hold the house party — with Percy and Mary Shelley, Clair Clairmont, and Dr John Polidori — that went on to inspire Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein.   What short story did Polidori write, as a result of this evening?
Q3) 16th June, 1871, saw the University Tests Act become law in the UK.   It meant Oxford, Cambridge and Durham Universities could not test potential students religions: unless they were to study what?
A3) Theology.
Q4) 16th June, 1924, saw lessons begin at what was Whampoa Military Academy.   The Academy is the military academy for which Asian nation?
A4) The Republic of China: Taiwan, in other words.
Q5) Finally … 16th June, 2010, saw Bhutan become the first country to completely ban what: tobacco, heroin or cannabis?
A5) Tobacco.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“Britishness was about empire, Britishness was about slavery, oppression, hence the Butcher’s Apron. Britishness has a long legacy which we want to disown.”

Ken Loach, born 17th June, 1936.
And this tune …

Have a good day … !
