The Daily Teaser — 7-7-2015

Ah-HA!   The box-set of Sapphire and Steel that I ordered?

Has officially been delivered … !

And I have to admit, I’ve been having a bit of a binge watch: certainly of Assignment’s 1 and 2.

Actually Assignment 2 — Story 2, Adventure 2, whatever ever you want to call it — is the notorious one: set in an abandoned railway station, it sees our heroes dealing something — something — lurking on the footbridge connecting the two platforms of a railway station.

It’s got to be said, this particular one … has a very slow pace.

But … ?

But ALSO ramps up the tension in a way I think very little modern TV shows do.

With the possible exception of a couple of Torchwood episodes, Small Worlds and From Out Of The Rain.   Which, by a huge co-incidence, where written by Sapphire and Steel creator, P. J. Hammond.

It just goes to show, I think.

You can’t keep a seriously spooky writer down …

I think I should also add one more thing, before we move on.

Today is the tenth anniversary of the 7/7 bombing attacks on various parts of London.

I can remember that day.

I was working at The Hutton: a small pub — now called the Hutton Junction — near to Shenfield Station, one of the main stations on the line from Southend to Liverpool Street: one of the London terminals hit by the bombers.

I can remember when many of the regulars — city workers, mostly, unable to get to work, because of the bombs — coming back in, looking shocked, stunned … and grateful to be alive.

I kept serving pints.

Most, if not all of them, seriously needed a beer.

So, if nothing else?

I have to admit that my thoughts are with those customers: I’m grateful none were killed or injured.

My thoughts are also with those who lost loved ones: as are my prayers.   there’s not much else I can say or do that would help.

I do know, though, I have one thought.

The bombings happened the day after it was announced that London was to host the 2012 Olympics.

The day those Olympics started?

The weeks London hosted a successful Olympic Games?

Means — to me — that the bombers lost …

But let’s get a move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: and scoring four out of five.

Let’s see how she — and you — do with today’s questions, shall we?

Here’s today’s questions: along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 7th July, 1969, saw the death of Brian Jones: founder member of which UK band?
Q2) The coroner at Jones’ inquest recorded a verdict of what: death by hanging, death by misadventure or death by drowning?
Q3) 7th July, 1456 — many years after her death — saw Joan of Arc acquitted.   Of what: blasphemy, heresy or barratry?
Q4) 7th July, 1958, saw President Dwight D. Eisenhower sign the law that turned WHAT, into a US state?
Q5) 7th July, 1985, saw Boris Becker become the youngest man to win a title at Wimbledon.   Which Wimbledon title did he win?
Q6) Finally … 7th July, 1947, saw the birth of David ‘Scar’ Hodo: best remembered as a member of the Village People.   Which Village Person was he?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 6th July, 1483, saw Richard 3rd crowned as King of England.   He (apparently) killed his nephews, Edward and Richard: in which London castle?
A1) The Tower of London.
Q2) Louis Pasteur successfully tested a new vaccine: on the 6th July, 1885.   The vaccine prevented which disease: Tuberculosis, Rabies or Smallpox?
A2) Rabies.
Q3) 6th July, 1964, saw Malawi become independent of the UK.   Who — on the 6th July, 1966 — became its first President: Dover Nyondo, Rochester Kayuni or Hastings Banda?
Q4) 6th July, 2006, saw the re-opening of the Nathu La Pass: after a brief war in 1962.   The Pass connects two countries.   Name either.
A4) China or India.   (Actually … ?   The Tibetan word, ‘La’ means ‘Pass’: the name translates as Nathu Pass Pass.   We could be in Torpenhow Hill territory …)
Q5) Finally … 6th July, 1997, saw the Sojourner Rover start exploring its surroundings.   Where was it?
A5) Mars.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“Each generation thinks it invented sex; each generation is totally mistaken.”

Robert A. Heinlein, July 7, 1907 – May 8, 1988.
And — as it’s Bill Oddy’s birthday — this tune …

Enjoy your day … !
