The Brentwood Gazette’s Weekly Teaser — 30-9-2015: the Ripper

Right …

You can TELL it’s a Wednesday, can’t you … ?

You can’t?

There’s several ways of finding out.   Looking at a calendar’s a good option.

Or … ?

Checking here …

~≈Ç≈~

The Daily Teaser — 30-9-2015: Thunderbirds Are Go … !

You know, right now … ?

Right now, I‘ve got an earworm: a song, in other words, playing through my head.

In this particular case … ?

One of the catchier songs from The Associates: Waiting for the Love Boat, from their Perhaps album.

Usually … ?   I have no idea why a tune will be squatting in my head.

Although, in this case?   I know what roughly why: I was listening to the album, last night, whilst making some videos.

I’m not complaining.

It’s a nice little tune … !

Speaking personally, though … ?

Speaking personally, I think it’s sad that the band’s singer, Billy MacKenzie, died at such a young age.

The Daily Teaser — 29-9-2015

Right …

That’s THAT here … !

Did I mention I ordered a new monitor for my computer set-up?   At least, a refurbished one?

It turned up, yesterday.

All good: although I’m willing to bet it turned up, five minutes after I walked out of my front door, to head to Brentwood High Street.

At any rate, it’s here.

Complete with box, TONS of bubble wrap, a VGA cable, and the power cord.

Which is all good.

One thing about this particular monitor, though?   Is that, on top of the VGA port — the video connection, in other words — the monitor in question has a DVI port.   Which, frankly, is a better fit for my Mac Pro.

All I’m waiting for, now … ?

Is a DVI cable.

Wouldn’t you know it … ?

The Daily Teaser — 28-9-2015

People that have followed me for a while will have realised I’m a Terry Pratchett fan.

One who’s been a fan since the early days of his Discworld series: after picking up a copy of The Colour of Magic, back in the 1980s.

Well …

I finally finished his last book, The Shepherd’s Crown: quite quietly, in bed, last night.

And … ?   Frankly, I think that’s possibly some of the saddest words I could write: “… finished his last book.”

It’s kind of hard to explain.   But I’ve taken a deep joy in the worlds Sir Terry created.

The saddest part of book … ?   Was coming to the end of it, with the realisation that there will be no more of them.

No more Tiffany.   No more witches.   No more Feegles.   The road to Ankh-Morpork is closed.

Yes, there’s STILL a lot of Discworld novels out there.

But nothing new.

Between you and me … ?   And this will sound odd, I know.

But between you and me, I gently whispered “Thank you, Terry” to my copy of The Shepherd’s Crown, last night*.

It was the only way I had of thanking the man for all the delight he’s given me.

The Daily Teaser — 27-9-2015: The Equation

Well, it has to be said, if a TV show’s worth watching, it’s worth watching twice.

Or, at least, I think so, anyway.

Which is why I’ve got last night’s episode of Dr Who on, again.

Personally … ?

I’m thinking, at this point, that you can’t have too much of Julian Bleach as Davros: nor of Michelle Gomez as Missy.

These first two episodes of Series 9 — The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar — are incredible stuff.

~≈Â≈~

Doctor Who Series 9: Episode 2 — The Witch’s Familiar

Right at the moment … ?   Right at the moment … ?

Right the moment … ?

I’m sorely tempted … by thoughts of cocoa …

No, really.

I’ve literally finished work, tonight: at just after nine o’clock, this evening.

And … ?   Well, while I’m not exactly tired … ?   I’m not exactly tired, cocoa is starting to look appealing.

 Hang on …

Let me go make one …

~≈Í≈~

The Daily Teaser — 26-9-2015

Well, THAT’S an embarrassment … !

Doubly so, in fact … !

Not only have I not made a slideshow for today’s Teaser — something I’ve done religiously for year — but I’ve found out what’s caused the problem with my monitor: after buying a new one … !

First off, the slideshow … ?   Sorry about that, but I managed to miss making it, in the midst of doing a large batch of them.

The other embarrassment … ?   The monitor?   Remember me saying, yesterday, that I was getting some weird ghosting?   Static … ?

Turns out it was caused by interference from an internal drive that I have: one plugged into an enclosure, that I’m intent on using as overspill storage.

Realising that turning the thing off, when I’m not using it, means no static on my second monitor is a good thing.   It’s just a  shame I realised that after I’ve gone and bought a new one.

Cie la vie!

Now, before I move on … ?   Does anyone need a new monitor … ?

~≈Ê≈~

The Friday Question Set — 25-9-2015

Right …

That’s an extra monitor ordered … …

I don’t know about you, but I’ve got two monitors hooked up to my computer.

And frankly, can’t imagine, now, not having two monitors hooked up.

Right at the moment, though?   The extra one is getting some weird staticky ghosting going on: WHY, I don’t know.

I’ll get it figured out, one day.

But it probably tells you why I’ve managed to order a refurbished 17” monitor, via Amazon.

Hey ho …

~≈Ê≈~

The Daily Teaser — 25-9-2015

Hmmm …

Looks like I’ve possibly got issues, there.

I’m getting some static on my second monitor …

As you may or may not know, I’ve got a Mac Pro: capable — indeed connected to — two monitors.

The newer of which … is fine.

The other, bought second hand … ?   Is getting some weird static.

That doesn’t clear up, after changing to new cables.

Worst case … ?

Well, worst case, I need a new computer.   Or new video card, certainly.

The least I can do … ?   Is buy a refurbished monitor: which I can afford, this week.

Here’s hoping it’s not — in the words of the late Sir Terry Pratchett — a complete whittle …

~≈Ê≈~

The Daily Teaser — 24-9-2015: The Devil’s Tower

Drat … !

Did I mention I was working, yesterday … ?

Yes, I did, didn’t I …

I ALSO mentioned that I was hoping the results for the up selling contest would be in.   Which they weren’t: but I’m not going to worry too much about that.

What got me, yesterday … ?   Was how busy it was.

I don’t know that we can necessarily understand the words ‘non-stop’ until we’re in a place to fully understand them.

Yesterday, at work?   For me?

Yesterday, at work, for me … was that place.

It was non-bloomin’-stop … !!

~≈Â≈~

The Brentwood Gazette’s Weekly Teaser — 23-9-2015: The Phantom

Right …

It’s a Wednesday.

Which means that, as always, I’m feeling slightly rushed: as I’m due to head to work in a bit.

But … ?

Well, I’m kind of looking forward to it.

The fast-food joint I work for does an informal up-selling contest: and I’d like to see how I’m doing, frankly … !

~≈Ç≈~

The Daily Teaser — 23-9-2015

Right, it’s now a Wednesday.

You’d guessed that, hadn’t you?

Which means, of course, that I’m back at work.   I’m actually looking forward to it.

In part … ?   Because we have an official up selling contest: that runs for six weeks.   Having won the first one, but missed out on the second, I’d like to see what this weeks results are.

It’s not that I’m competitive.

Good lord, no!

I’d just like to know I’m doing better at it than everyone else … !

~≈Â≈~

The Daily Teaser — 22-9-2015

Hmmm …

You know I like a film, occasionally, don’t you?

And that, when I watch them, I tend to write about them?

Well, I caught one, last night: the 2014 feature, Hellmouth.

Interesting looking little film, Hellmouth: with a nice job of work done Stephen McHattie in the lead role.

But, my WORD … !

It could have done with having one plot-line all the way through!

~≈Â≈~

Monday, 21 September 2015

Hellmouth: Oh, Dear … !

21st September, 2015.

You know, there’s times when a film seems like a good idea.

No, really.

I’ve had a day off, today.   I’ve done some minimal shopping, put in a little work into a #Teaser slideshow — tomorrow’s, at least — and done some cleaning up around the flat.

Oh … and ripped a couple of DVDs.

Which regular readers will guess I’d’ve been doing!

They would ALSO have guessed — possibly — that I’ve had a free evening, tonight.

A free evening, and iTunes credit.

And NOTHING on TV …

Well …

Bar the potted history of archaeology that’s showing at the moment …

At ANY rate … ?   I was in the mood for a short movie: something to occupy my mind, hopefully good and entertaining, and — on top of that — visually appealing.

That’s what I wanted.

What I rented … ?   Was the 2014 film, Hellmouth.

‘Oh dear’ is the right choice of words, I think.

~≈Á≈~

The Daily Teaser — 21-9-2015: The Hobbit

Phew … !

I have an official day off!

Actually … ?   I’ve got today and tomorrow off.

Which is handy.   Frankly, I’ve been writing Nik Nak’s Old Peculiar for some time: and thoroughly enjoying it.

But do like having the time to both write the #Teasers, and to produce the slideshows that go with them.

What’s more … ?   I’ve been borrowing an old friend’s library of Dr Who DVDs: so I can rebuild my digital collection.

I’ve just finished the Sylvester McCoy/Paul McGann episodes: which means I can rip the DVDs I’ve recently had delivered, and add them.

Frankly … ?   I’m looking forward, once that’s done, to catching Aaagh! It’s The Mr Hell Show.   But I’ve ALSO got series two of House of Cards in the mix.

Which looks as interesting as the first.

Well …

You could say that …

The Daily Teaser — 20-9-2015

Now, I have to confess to having had a very good day off, yesterday.

After all, it finished with The Magician’s Apprentice: possibly the strongest opening episode of Dr Who I’ve seen in a while.   I’ll try not to spoil things for Debbi, as I don’t know if she and partner Rick, haven’t seen it yet.   But my word, that was one to watch!

I also managed to get to see my nephew, Jude: who’s getting tall, for a four year-old!

And possibly the owner of the daffiest sense of humour …

Oh … And a delivery turned up!   From Amazon.

Of some DVDs* I’d ordered, I should add.   The original switch I’d ordered still hasn’t arrived.

Personally … ?   I’m somehow not surprised … !

~≈Ê≈~

Dr Who Series Nine: Episode 1 — The Magician’s Apprentice

19th September, 2015.

Now, here’s a rarity …

I’ve opened a post … but have no screen shots to go with it …

You’re possibly wondering what I’m talking about, aren’t you … ?   You are, aren’t you … ?   I can tell, you know.

A screen shot, so you know, is a photo: usually of something that’s on the screen — hence the name — of a computer, phone or tablet.

Occasionally … ?

It is — if it’s from a computer screen — an application window.

It’s application windows I’m thinking of, here.

You see, I’ve just watched the opening episode of Dr Who series 9 — episode 1, The Magician’s Apprentice — and come away very impressed.

EXCEPT for one thing.

My system — a first generation Mac Pro, running OS X 10.7.x, Lion — is hard at work.

Letting me write this post, whilst ripping a copy of The Curse Of Fenric with HandBreak, and using the native copy of QuickTime to export tonight’s episode into a form I can play back later.

All this … and keeping TweetDeck open, to see what’s going past … !

Frankly … ?   I’ve turned off the heating, under the circumstances.

And not yet had a chance to do a screenshot from the episode.

Wallpaper will have to do.

~≈Ê≈~

The Daily Teaser — 19-9-2015: Talk Like A Pirate Day

Well, it’s official.

It’s a Saturday.

And it’d one of those rare ones that I have off.

I’m not complaining: I’ve a day off, a little shopping to do, some cash to burn …

And the opening episode of Dr Who to look forward too, tonight.

Oh … And quite possibly a visit from my nephew, as well.

Look’s like I’ve an interesting day ahead …

~≈◊≈~

The Daily Teaser — 18-9-2015

You know, I THINK I’m up, comparatively early.

What on EARTH do I mean, EARLY … … ?

I know for a fact, I got up, today, at 6:30.

You’re probably asking why, aren’t you?

Especially when you consider I’m doing a 12 until 10 shift today.

Frankly … ?   It’s pay-day, today.   Which means, before I start my shift, I’d like to get some of my bills paid.

Oh …

And take a little time to do some online shopping.

They’ve got the second series of House of Cards on there.   I’d like to catch up … !

~≈Â≈~

The Daily Teaser — 17-9-2015: The Baron …

Now, it HAS to be said …

I’ve now got a set-top box wired into the rat’s nest that I call my TV set.

Everything’s happily working.

I have, though, a couple of questions.

Can anyone suggest a good app, that will let me turn the recordings I make onto USB stick, into stuff I can then watch on my phone, Apple TV and computer?

That’s one.

The other … ?

Is ‘What on Earth did I record, last night?’   I really have NO idea … !

~≈Ê≈~

The Brentwood Gazette’s Weekly Teaser — 16-9-2015: Sailing By …

Right …

It’s Wednesday.

You know that, obviously.

Which means I’m working: again.   Not that I’m complaining, there, obviously: it DOES pay for DVDs.

He says, frantically eyeballing his Amazon wish list … !

At ANY rate … ?

Let’s get telling you today’s questions, shall we?

~≈†≈~

The Daily Teaser — 16-9-2015

Right, I think I can safely say that I now have …

A switch … !

Just in case you’ve not been following me for a while, I]ve a TV: with only one HDMI port.

Which means — in theory — I can only plug in one HDMI device to it.   Things like blu-ray players or games consoles.

Or the set-top box I ordered, a few weeks ago.

The switch I ordered with it … ?   Didn’t.

So I ordered another.   Which has now turned up.   That’s it, in the picture at the bottom of the pile.

It’s now wired into my TV: and allowing me to watch a Melvin Bragg documentary on Tyndale’s English translation of the Bible.   A documentary I recorded last night, via the set-top box.   I should also be able to archive the high-definition version of things I’ve recorded.

I also managed to rent and watch The Sleeping Room, through my Apple TV.

The signal’s from both went through, with no problems.

Personally … ?

Well, personally, I’m happy.

But I think I’m going to have to some cable ties, at some point.

I’ve not got cable spaghetti at the back of my TV.

I’ve got a rat’s nest …

~≈Ê≈~

Tuesday, 15 September 2015

The Sleeping Room — Hmmm …

15th September, 2015

Hmmm …

How long have you been following Nik Nak’s Old Peculiar?

If you don’t mind my asking?

Hopefully, it’s for as long as however you feel comfortable doing.

And, hopefully … ?   Long enough to realise I like a film or two.

And try my damnedest to tell people about them, afterwards.

I’ve had a free night, tonight.

I’ve had money in my iTunes account.

And frankly … ?   An urge to catch … something …

The something in questions … ?   Was the crowd funded, 2014, John Shackleton film: The Sleeping Room.

And yes … I think ‘Hmmm’ is appropriate …

~≈fi≈~

The Daily Teaser — 15-9-2015

Right, I think I’ve got a plan … !

You’ve possible been following me for a while: at least I hope so.

And following me for long enough to know I not Mr Patient.

I have a TV: one with just one HDMI port.   As I’d wanted to add high-definition channels — and back-up recording options — I bought a cheap set-top box, an extra couple of HDMI cables … and a switch.

So I could plug two devices into the one port on my telly.

I got impatient: as the switch I’d ordered when I ordered the set top box was taking its own sweet time.

So I ordered another: on Friday, just gone.

That … ?   Along with a couple of books and DVDs, turned up yesterday.

Which is why I say I’ve got a bit of a plan.

I’ve got the day off, today.   Shopping’s done, Teasers written and had the matching videos made …

Which means I’ve the time to set the thing up.   Here’s hoping I’ve got a spare bit of TV aerial cable … !

~≈Ê≈~

Monday, 14 September 2015

The Daily Teaser — 14-9-2015

Right, that’s that OFFICIALLY done … !

You’ve possibly realised — if you’ve been reading Nik Nak’s Old Peculiar for a while — that I’ve a new TV: one with only one HDMI socket.

BIT of a problem, when you realise quite how many HDMI devices there are, out there.

Including a new set-top box I own: but haven’t yet connected, as the one port I have on my TV is occupied by my Apple TV.

I ordered what’s called a switch — a device that let’s me connect more than one HDMI device to the same port — at the same time as the box.   The box, and a spare cable, have been here for about two weeks.

I’ve ordered another.   In the hope ONE of them will get to me, before Saturday’s airing of Dr Who.

Here’s hoping THAT happens: preferably, before Marc Almond starts singing … … …

~≈Â≈~

Sunday, 13 September 2015

The Daily Teaser — 13-9-2015

Hmmm …

You know, of course, that I have a bad — or good, depending on who you ask — habit of listening to Radio 4 in the morning.

I’ve just been listening to their Sunday* morning religious programme, Sunday: who’ve covered the case of Bishop Peter Ball.

Who’s been found guilty of several historical cases of child abuse.

It seems the Bishop had got off with a police caution: back in the 1990s.

!!

Now, I’m no victim of someone like the Bishop.   Thankfully.

But I’ve known people who have been.

I was mildly shocked to hear he’d been — effectively — let off: but not too surprised.

Lord knows what my friends who HAVE been affected would be thinking … !

~≈Ê≈~

Saturday, 12 September 2015

The Daily Teaser — 12-9-2015

You know, I have to admit to being a touch … tired.

After all, I was working until 12:30, last night.

It’s left me feeling a touch …

Well, yes, tired!

Especially as I’m back in at 12:30, today.

Which I know makes me sound like a hinging pom, but there you go.   Hinging?   Whinging … !

At ANY rate, last night … ?

At any rate, and quite strangely, last night was a fun evening: certainly from where I’m sitting.

Just don’t ask about happy bunny jumps …

~≈®≈~

Friday, 11 September 2015

The Friday Question Set 11-9-2051

Hmmm …

Well …

That’s THAT done …

You probably realise I’m a Dr Who fan.

And one who’s looking forward to the start of the new series.

And thoroughly enjoyed seeing the season 9 prologue, that’s been released, online.

And one who’s mildly annoyed.   I ordered a set-top box from Amazon, a while ago: one capable, much like my TV, of recording tv shows to a USB stick.

In part, as back up: just in case my temperamental TV failed to record to a USB stick.

When I ordered that … ?   I ALSO ordered a spare cable: and what’s called an HDMI switch.   A thing that let’s me plug more than one HDMI equipped device into my TV’s one HDMI socket, and switch between the set-top box, AND my Apple TV.
  1. Set-top box? Check.
  2. Cable? Check …
  3. Switch … ? Not a bloody sausage … !

It’s getting to the point where, this morning … ?   I’ve ordered another switch, this morning: in the hope ONE of them turns up, before Saturday … !

~≈ß≈~

The Daily Teaser — 11-9-2015

You know, I’ve an occasional bad habit: of getting distracted by stuff, online.

Especially when I’m posting here.

It’s NOT good, is it … ?

At any rate, floating around, just now … ?

I’ve found that legendary — or possibly notorious — independent film makers, Troma are not only still active …

But have a YouTube channel … !

The reason I mention this … ?   Well, simply that I’ve never actually seen a Troma film.

The company makes deliberately bad — and, apparently, very tongue in cheek — films: and has been active for many years.

The fact they have a YouTube channel?   Allows me to finally check out quite how silly films like Sergeant Kabukiman NYPD, Toxic Avenger and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead actually ARE.

Come on … They made and distributed Chopper Chick in Zombietown* … !

~≈®≈~

Thursday, 10 September 2015

The Daily Teaser — 10-9-2015

You know, I bought a little set-top box on Amazon.

A couple of weeks ago, now.

It’s a device that lets me view Freeview content — especially high definition Freeview content — on my TV.

Yes, I KNOW my new TV already receives — and can record —digital signals.

As the box ALSO does so … ?   It gives me an extra device to record stuff with.   A back up, device.

The only problem with that … ?

Is that the thing hooks up to the TV, with an HDMI cable: an extra one of those is ALREADY here, as I ordered it at the same time.

I ALSO ordered a cheap HDMI switch.    A little gadget that let’s me plug up to three HDMI equipped devices to my TV: and something I ordered at the same time as the set top box, and the cable.

They’re here.

The three-way switch isn’t.

I think that’s the last time I order from a third-party Amazon seller … who’s in Hong Kong … !

That switch is really taking it’s time … !

The Brentwood Gazette’s Weekly Teaser — 9-9-2015: Tolstoy

Right …

Once again, I’m working on a Wednesday: and I’m feeling somewhat rushed.

I’m ALSO aware that it’s going to taker the chaps at the Gazette will take a while to post these.

At ANY rate … ?

Let’s get moving on …

~≈Ê≈~

The Daily Teaser — 9-8-2015: In California

Lord knows how I was actually going to start this post.   I had no idea.   Possibly by telling you about the weather.

But … ?

I also have to confess that I’ve posted up the slideshow for today’s California-themed Teaser.

While I was doing so … ?

I caught this trailer for an upcoming movie called Steve Jobs: all about the late Apple CEO.

I’m intrigued: and impressed by the trailer.

Personally … ?   I wouldn’t mind catching the thing …

~≈Ê≈~

House of Cards — Series 1: Episodes 12 and 13

You know, I have a habit or two.

Possibly several, actually: now I come to think of it.

And a few of those … ?   Will be ones I’m not going to admit to on a public forum like a blog!

Not if I can help it … !

One of the ones I will admit to … ?

Is liking a TV series or two.

And … ?   Well, over the past few nights, I’ve been watching House of Cards.

While tonight’s too episodes haven’t got me as caught as the rest of the series?

It does round off this initial series, rather well.

~≈Í≈~

The Daily Teaser — 8-9-2015

Hmmm …

Apparently, things went rather well …

You might remember, yesterday, that I mentioned my nephew, Jude.

Yesterday … was his first day at school.

And it has to be said, he does look a touch thoughtful in that photo.

Personally … ?

Personally, I’ve never actually HAD children: he’s my youngest relative.

So you can possibly see why I like keeping an eye on him.

The little I’ve had back, though … ?   Tells me his first day went well.

Here’s hoping the REST of his career goes well … …

~≈Í≈~

House of Cards — Series 1: Episodes 10 and 11

You know, I have to confess, I do like a good TV show.

You’ve noticed that, haven’t you … ?

After all, I’ve been writing about various TV shows for some time, now.

Just recently … ?

You’d possibly have realised I’ve caught Penny Dreadful …

And, over the past few nights, the US version of House of Cards.

At least, the first series.

Tonight, I caught episodes 10 and 11.

And … ?

I’m impressed.

~≈§≈~

The Daily Teaser — 7-9-2015

Ye … GODS … !

I THINK I need more sleep.

No, really … !

I’m feeling just a touch tired.

After all, yesterday saw me up early, to go to a staff meeting — nope, I didn’t even place in this period’s up-selling competition, but there you go — AND THEN … getting a comparative late night.

Watching the next three episodes of series one of House of Cards.

All that’s left me knackered.

Mind you … ?   That scene with Robin Wright as Claire Underwood … ?

Phew … !

All of THAT … ?   All of THAT, and I’m mildly worried for my nephew, Jude.   Today … ?   Is his first day at school … !

~≈Â≈~

House of Cards — Series 1: Episodes 7, 8 and 9.

You know, you must be getting used to this, by now.

At least, I’m assuming you are.

Getting used to me posting up something: at (comparatively) odd hours.

If it’s not a Teaser at comparatively silly o’clock in the morning, then it’s a TV or movie write-up at silly o’clock in the evening.

Like this one.

You see, although I don’t actually have a Netflix subscription, I have been following series 1 of their version of House of Cards.

And?

Come away impressed, so far …

~≈¥≈~

Sunday, 6 September 2015

The Daily Teaser — 6-9-2015

Oh … crap … !

It’s a Sunday morning.

And I’m up at silly o’clock in the morning.

Seriously silly o’clock in the morning … !

Frankly … ?   We have a staff meeting, this morning.

At 8-30.

I can’t complain about that.   I’m as curious as anyone else, to find out who’s won this period’s up selling contest.

It would be nice to retain that trophy, however meaningless it may be in the long run.

Still …

It’s seriously silly o’clock … !

~≈Ø≈~

Saturday, 5 September 2015

The Daily Teaser — 5-9-2015: Sweet Charity

You know it’s September, don’t you … ?

You know it, I know it, we know it, they know it … what have you …

And, to be frank … ?   You can tell the season’s are starting to change.

At least, I can.

For starters … ?

The overcast sky outside my window’s starting to look a bit … menacing.

And, on top of that … ?

I’ve switched on my heating, this morning: for the first time in a few months.

It’s not that it’s cold.   Not per se.

But there’s definitely an edge to the temperature …

~≈Â≈~

Friday, 4 September 2015

House of Cards — Series 1: Episodes 4, 5 and 6.

You know, I have to make a confession, here.

I am on something of a budget.

You’d worked that out, hadn’t you?

You’d ALSO worked out that — if I get the chance — I’ll spend money on entertainment.   Much like the rest of us.

I tend to spend a certain amount on iTunes gift cards.

That lets me buy albums, and rent movies, relatively controllably.

I can only spent what’s in my account: and top that account up, as and when I have the funds to do so.

I’m ALSO of the school of thought that believes that, if I’ve spent my cash on a TV series box set, it’s mine.

I can back it up to my computer, and sell the physical set on.

That doesn’t give me the right to sell illegal copies on.

It does mean that, should I have not had the chance to watch a given series, I can watch it: even if I’ve had to sell on the physical copies to somewhere like CeX, if I need funds.

What it does mean … ?   Is that, too an extent, I can ‘bank’ a TV series for later viewing: when I’ve got the time to do so.
