The Daily Teaser — 6-12-2015: TAXI!

That’s a thought …

Did I mention, a couple of days ago, that police raided the flat opposite mine?

I’ve got to admit, I’d love to know WHY … but then, who wouldn’t … ?

Last night … ?

Well, last night, I got home from work …
Only to notice that the light was still on in one of the rooms, in the flat.

I just have to wonder what on EARTH is happening, there … !

Well … wouldn’t you … ?

~≈Î≈~

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw both Debbi* and Olga† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 6th December, 1897, saw London become the first city in the world to issue licenses for taxis.   London taxis are — famously — what colour?
Q2) London Taxis are formally called what carriages?
Q3) London’s cabbies have to take a very extensive exam: to show they have a working knowledge of London’s streets.   This exam — and the associated knowledge — is called what?
Q4) London was home to a type of horse-drawn taxi: drawn by just one horse, and named for its original designer.   What’s it called?
Q5) To operate a London cab, the driver has to have a license: from which body?
Q6) Finally … Many London cabbies feel their livelihoods at risk: from a company which lets you book a ride, through a smart phone app.   Which company?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) Prohibition ended in the US: on December 5th, 1933.   It ended when which US state ratified the 21st Amendment?
A1) Ironically, the Mormon homeland, Utah.
Q2) Nelson Mandela died: on the 5th of December, 2013.   He was a member of which Xhosa speaking tribal people’s royal family?
A2) The
.   (I’m told that, in Xhosa, they’re known as the abaThembu.)
Q3) The Preston By-pass opened on the 5th December, 1958.   It’s considered part of two of Britain’s motorways.   Name either one of them.
A3) The M6 or M55.
Q4) The original nodes of the ARPANET — the foundation of today’s Internet — were connected: on 5th December, 1969.   How many nodes — connected computers — did it have?
A4) Four.
Q5) Finally … Helmut Zilk was injured in a letter-bomb attack: on 5th December, 1993.   Where was he mayor of, at the time?
A5) Vienna.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“One thing about being a cabbie is that you don’t have to worry about being fired from a good job.”

Alex Reiger (Judd Hirsch) Taxi, 1978 to 1983.
And a Harry Chapin tune …

And something mellow for a Sunday morning …

Have a good day … !

*        I hope it went well for you, Debbi‡^!   Just don’t strain your hand!

†        I know I almost lost my hat a Few times, Olga‡^: blowy doesn’t even start!   (You know, I’ve never actually SEEN M.   I HAVE caught Metropolis, though: the design for it is gorgeous!   I keep wondering how much of the design was influenced by Zemyatin’s We … )

‡        Oh, point for you both … ?   I read Terry Pratchett’s A Slip of The Keyboard, recently.   Going by the article he wrote about book signings, that’s featured in it?   Buckets of iced water go down a treat for authors on book signing tours.

^        Actually, Debbi, Olga … ?   I’ve just realised the intro for today’s #Teaser video opens with “You May Have Had Nightmares About Us.”   Says a lot about London cabs, I think …
