The Daily Teaser — 17-1-2016

Oh, well, that’s a result.

We’re not snowed in …

The UK can be something of an odd beast, sometimes.

Especially when it comes to the weather.

As you’ve possibly worked out, we’re in the northern hemisphere: and therefore enjoying winter.

Well, I say enjoying …

At any rate, it’s winter: and you’d expect snow, at some point.   Wouldn’t you?

Parts of the south-east — the part of the UK which includes my home town — have been hit with snow.

Apart from my bit.

I’m thankful, to be honest.

It’s going to be freezingly cold, out.   But at least I’m not going to go end over end, over snow!

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* and Olga† putting in their answers: with both scoring ten out of ten.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) 17th January, 1964, saw the birth of First Lady, Michelle Obama.   She and husband, President Obama, met when both were working at Sidley Austin.   The company is what: a pharmaceutical company, law firm or caterers?
Q2) 17th January, 1966, saw the birth of musician, Rexton Gordon.   Mr Gordon is better known as which toaster?
Q3) E. C. Segar’s best known creation debuted: on the 17th January, 1929.   Who WAS that creation?
Q4) The first meeting of the UN Security Council was held on 17th January: of which year?
Q5) Finally … 17th January, 1977, saw the first execution in the US: for a decade.   Of whom?
Here’s yesterday’s Terrible questions and answers …
Q1) 16th January, 1547, saw Ivan 4th Vasilyevich become Tsar of all the Russias.   Ivan 4th also known as Ivan Grozny: and Ivan the what?
A1) Ivan the Terrible.   (The usual English translation of ‘Grozny’ is ‘Terrible’: I’ve got the impression, over the years, that ‘Formidable’ would be a more accurate translation.)
Q2) Ivan was Tsar from 1547.   What title had he held, until then?
Q3) How old was Ivan, when he was named as Tsar: 15, 16 or 17?
A3) 16.
Q4) The term, ‘Tsar,’ comes from from a Latin word.   Which Latin word?
A4) Caesar.
Q5) Whilst Tsar, Ivan founded the Streltsy, one of the earliest forms of Russian standing … what: navy, air-force or army?
A5) Army.
Q6) He also ordered the building of what was — until 1600 — Moscow’s tallest building.   What IS that building?
Q7) At one point, Ivan asked for a guarantee of asylum, if ever needed: in England.   Which English monarch did he request that from: Mary 1st, Elizabeth 1st or James 1st and 6th?
Q8) Ivan added which ‘S’ to Russia?
A8) Siberia.
Q9) He also conquered the Astrakhan Khanate.   The Khanate is on the coast of which ‘C’?
A9) The Caspian Sea.
Q10) Finally … who replaced Ivan as Tsar?
A10) His son, Feodor 1.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“It has been said that an engineer is a man who can do for ten shillings what any fool can do for a pound; if that be so, we were certainly engineers.”

Nevil Shute, 17 January 1899 – 12 January 1960.
And this tune …

Have a good day …

*        Let’s hope we see him again, on Friday, Debbi!   (Doozy … ?   I certainly HOPE so!)

†        I THINK I did that, Olga.   I managed to catch The Stone Tape: something I’ve been meaning to see for a while …
