The Daily Teaser — 29-1-2016: The VC

You know, I do like to make sure I’ve got the radio — at least, my TV’s digital radio channels — on, at this time of the morning.

I like to hear other human voices, most morning: and find the TV news channels, along with everything else, distracting.

Radio 4’s Today programme?   Has just mentioned Storm Gertrude.

Most of Britain?   Usually has fairly mild — ish — weather.

At least … certainly not as bad as some parts of the world.

But right now … ?

Right now, I’m glad I don’t live in Scotland.

Storm Gertrude looks like it’s putting the ’87 Hurricane into the shade …

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: scoring ten out of ten in the porcess.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) 29th January saw the VC medal first instituted.   What does VC stand for?
Q2) Which Queen introduced it?
Q3) In which year of the 1850s was it introduced?
Q4) The medal is awarded for which ‘V’?
Q5) The VC is awarded for that ‘V’: in the face of whom?
Q6) The first VC was awarded during which war?
Q7) Who was Britain fighting against in that war?
Q8) The medal’s shape is a cross what: pattée, paté or pattern?
Q9) How many times — since World War 2 — has the original VC been awarded?
Q10) Who’s the most recent British Army soldier to have received the VC?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) Lego patented their famous plastic bricks on the 28th January: of which year of the 1950s?
A1) 1958.
Q2) The company is based in the town of Billund.   Billund is in which European country: Denmark, Sweden or Norway?
A2) Denmark.
Q3) In which year of the 1940s did Lego start making the bricks?
A3) 1949.
Q4) The name, ‘Lego,’ is from a phrase in the company’s native language.   That means what: ‘I build,’ ‘play well,’ or ‘stabbing pain in the foot’?
A4) Play well’.   (Although the word ‘Lego’ also means ‘I assemble,’ in Latin.)
Q5) Windsor, in the UK, Günzburg, in Germany and Nusajaya, in Malaysia, are all home to Lego theme parks. These parks all share what name?
A5) Legoland.
Q6) My nephew had some of the bricks Lego makes for young children.   What brand name has Lego given these bricks?
A6) Duplo.   (He loved building towers with them: the taller, the better.)
Q7) Lego also sell a range of advanced construction sets: with gears, axles, and, in some sets, electric motors.   What do Lego call these sets: Lego Technics, Lego Botnics or Lego Electrics?
A7) Lego Technics.   (The fact some of the sets include studless parts has proven controversial to some Lego fans.)
Q8) Lego also sell a range of sets based on which DC Comics character: Batman, Superman or Wonderwoman?
A8) Batman.
Q9) One of the largest Lego models ever built had over five million parts: and was displayed in Times Square, in New York.   It was a life sized model of what: the TARDIS, the Enterprise, from ‘Star Trek’ or an X-wing from ‘Star Wars’?
A9) An X-wing.
Q10) Finally … 2014 saw the release of The LEGO Movie.   Which US studio was the film’s distributer: Disney, Warner Brothers or Universal?
I’ll lave you with this thought …
“Maybe I was brave, I don’t know.   At the time I was just doing the job, I didn’t have time for other thoughts.”

Corporal Johnson Beharry, winner of the VC.
And this video …

Have a good day …

*        ‘Killer’ is not the word, Debbi!   ‘Psychotic snack’ is nearer the mark!
