Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 14-8-2016

How closely do you follow the news?

I do, especially if it’s something that interests me: technology, for example, of things about my favourite TV shows, or films franchises.

Or if it’s about social media I use.

Something that’s floated across my timelines, recently?   Is Facebook’s on-going legal attempts to stop the Ad-Block Plus extension from working on the site.

The plug-in is widely used — including by myself — to keep annoying ads off web pages one visits.

So, while I can appreciate Facebook NOT liking it — advertising is how the site makes its money, after all — I, personally, intend to keep using AdBlock Plus.

Having grown up on broadcasts from the BBC — broadcasts uninterrupted by adverts — I value not seeing them.

I think that’s worth annoying Facebook.

But let’s moving on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw saw Debbi* and Angel† putting in their answers: with Debbi bagging eight out of ten, and Angel bagging ten!

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 14th August, 2015, saw the US re-open its embassy: in which Caribbean nation?
Q2) More to the point, the embassy is in that nation’s capital.   What’s the name of that capital?
Q3) The Marine Broadcasting Offences Act went into force: on 14th August, 1967.   What did it outlaw?
Q4) The first Youth Olympic Games opened: on 14th August, 2010.   It was held in which city?
Q5) France issued the first license plates: on 14th August, 1893.   Which European country was the second to issue license plates?
Q6) Finally … 14th August, 1966, saw the birth of the woman who won the Best Actress Oscar for 2002.   Who is she?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 13th August is International Left handers Day.   Ciotach is ‘left handed.’   In which European language?
Q2) Tradition says that one specific food item should — if spilt — be thrown over the left shoulder: so it can hit whatever devil is lurking there.   What food item?
A2) Salt.
Q3) The Zuni people considered the left hand — and left handed — to be lucky.   The Zuni are native to where?
A3) The USA: specifically, New Mexico and surrounding areas.   (I like them already … )
Q4) The sheep were on the right hand, and went to heaven.   The goats were on the left, and went to hell.   In a parable in which book of the New Testament?
A4) The Gospel of Matthew.   (There’s an old quote from my favourite writer, Terry Pratchett, which references this.   In Small Gods we read: “The merest accident of microgeography had meant that the first man to hear the voice of Om, and who gave Om his view of humans, was a shepherd and not a goatherd. They have quite different ways of looking at the world, and the whole of history might have been different. For sheep are stupid, and have to be driven. But goats are intelligent, and need to be led.”)
Q5) Rafael Nadal, Martina Navratilova and Goran Ivanišević, are all left-handed what?
Q6) Manny Pacquiao writes right-handedly.   But is a southpaw sportsman.   What sport IS that?
A6) Boxing.
Q7) Bongo is a term for ‘lefthanded:’ used by whom?
A7) Romany/Gypsy: it’s a Roma terms for the left hand.
Q8) Lloque Yupanqui was left handed: and the third ruler of which South American people?
A8) The Inca.   (He was the Sapa Inca.)
Q9) The term, ‘Left Hand Path,’ is said to be associated with what: gardening, black magic or building?
Q10) Finally … Wilko Johnson plays guitar right-handedly: despite being left handed.   Which pub rock band was he a founder member of?
A10) Dr Feelgood.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“Everyone thought I was going to die like a year later, they didn’t know. So I helped educate sports, and then the world, that a man living with HIV can play basketball. He’s not going to give it to anybody by playing basketball.”
Magic Johnson, born 14th August, 1959.
And a hoedown …

Have a good day … !

*        I HAVE to admit, it’s nice to see him in it, Debbi^.   It’s good to know his character survives!   (Dog Soldiers?   Sean gets killed and eaten by werewolves.   Event Horizon?   Blown up in an explosion on a haunted spaceship.   Doomsday?   He gets killed and eaten by a bunch of partying cannibals!   Howl?   AGAIN with the werewolves!   Gotham, he’s playing against type: but it’s nice to see he’s got a niche!)   At ANY rate … How IS the rehab going so far?   Would lifting coffee mugs help?

†      It took a while, Angel!   I usual use Keynote, Apple’s equivalent to Powerpoint, to make a slideshow: then turn export it as a video file.   THEN I use iMovie to add the vocals‡, and export it to the movie format Youtube wants.   Yesterday’s took a while … finding and deciphering that backwards font!   (Thank you, btw: but I’m VERY aware, that one needed a bit more work!)

‡        The Mac’s operating system can speak text: but ALSO turn text into an audio file that it can add to an iTunes playlist.

^        Doomsday has a great soundtrack … !

I missed today's question. I got caught up in work, politics and family. I made it in to see the program you used for Saturdays video. Very cool!

I use Adblock Plus for all sites. If a site refuses me entry I don't turn it off either. They can't force me to see their ads! lol

Going to try to do Monday's #Teaser after I get some sleep.
