Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 1-2-2017: The Secretary General

1st February, 2017.

Well, that’s official, then …

I’ve started an argument!

I’m in a sci-fi fan group on Facebook: and have suggested a woman play the role of Dr Who.

You’d’ve thought I’d’ve suggested raping babies, the way some have reacted!

I know — know — that people get very passionate about their favourite show.

I do, too.

But … ?

Go and read this piece.

Basically, Billie Piper and David Tennant have both come out in favour.

Nice to know they agree with me …

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: scoring five out five in the process.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s themed questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) Trygve Lie was named as UN Secretary General, on 1st February.   Of which year of the 1940s?
Q2) Which country was he from?
Q3) In being appointed as the first Secretary General, Lie replaced Gladwyn Jebb.   Jebb was what?
Q4) As Secretary General, Lie would’ve been in charge of what: the UNHCR, UNESCO or the Secretariat?
Q5) The Secretary General is His what: Holiness, Excellency or Highness?
Q6) The Secretary General’s official residence is in Sutton Place.   Sutton Place is in which US city?
Q7) The man who replaced Lie as UN Secretary General was Dag Hammarskjöld.   Hammarskjöld died as a result of a plane crash: in what’s now which ‘Z’?
Q8) Which of Lie’s successors was Burmese?
Q9) Which former — and recent — UN Secretary General is Ghanaian?
Q10) Finally … who’s the current holder of the office of Secretary General?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 31st January, 1862, saw astronomer Alvan Clark discover Sirius B.   Sirius B is a what: a red dwarf, a white giant or a white dwarf?
A1) A  white dwarf.   (Oh … Have a song … )
Q2) North Vietnam introduced its currency: on 31st January, 1946.   What IS that currency?
A2) The Dong.    (Strictly it’s a đồng …)
Q3) Britain’s most prolific serial killer was given a life sentence: on 31st January, 2000.   Who was he?
Q4) Tokugawa Ieyasu was born on 31st January, 1543.   He was the first holder of Japanese political office?
A4) The shogunate.
Q5) Finally … The Van Allen Belt was first detected: on 31st January, 1958.   The belt is what: a magnetic field, radiation belt or upper atmosphere?
I’ll leave you with a thought …
“A real diplomat is one who can cut his neighbour’s throat without having his neighbour notice it.”
Trygve Lie, 16 July 1896 – 30 December 1968.
And the UN Anthem†.

Enjoy your day …

*        I’m sure he’ll appreciate, Debbi … !   (I’ll be missing Peter Capaldi: he has been very good.   Season nine saw some impressive stuff: but I still think the real star was Maisie Williams!)

†        Am I the only person who thinks the Hymn of the UN needs some work?   Like a complete rewrite of the words?   I mean … it’s not what you call catchy …
