Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 24-3-2018: Shogun

24th March, 2018.

Have a lot at the date, there, would you … ?

2018, right?

That’s the year, yeah?

Well …

Yeah … WH Smiths, the stationers and newsagent — at least the Brentwood branch — seem on the ball.

I was there, yesterday: as the Brentwood branch is home to Brentwood’s main post office, where I pay most of my bills.

I couldn’t help but notice the huge display of security software: as it was by the main door …

I ALSO couldn’t help but notice the stickers on those boxes … the one that says ‘2017 Ready.’

2017.

I hate to sound picky, but the impression I’ve always had is that — with security software in particular — having the most recent version is important: it’ll catch more nasties, that way.

Selling something that seems to be last year’s model … ?

Seems a little off the ball …

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s themed questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 24th March, 1603, saw Tokugawa Ieyasu named as shōgun, by the Emperor.   The Emperor of where?
Q2) Which Emperor: Go-Suzaku, Go-Bananas or Go-Yōzei?
Q3) The title, shogun, is a military one equivalent to what: field Marshall, Grand Marshal or Generalissimo?
Q4) Tokugawa started a shōgunate period named for his family: that ruled from Edo Castle in Edo.   That castle’s not in which modern city?
Q5) Finally … The Tokugawa shōgunate ended when Tokugawa Yoshinobu handed the title back to Emperor Meiji.   In which year of the 1860s?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) James Francis Edward Stuart — a claimant to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland — landed in the Firth of Forth: on 23rd March, 1708.   James was known as the what: Young Pretender, Old Pretender or Great Pretender?
A1) The Old Pretender.
Q2) Had he ascended the throne of England, he’d been James the what … ?
A2) James 3rd of England.
Q3) Who was ACTUALLY on the throne at the time: Mary 2nd, William 3rd,  or Mary 2nd AND William 3rd?
A3) Mary 2nd AND William 3rd.   The pair are — to the best of my knowledge — the only joint monarchs in Britain’s history.   (Although, a quick check tells me Mary 1st was a co-monarch with her husband, Phillip 2nd of Spain.)
Q4) The Firth of Forth is where: Scotland, Wales, England or Ireland?
A4) Scotland.
Q5) Finally: after his death, James’ claim to the throne passed to his eldest son.   Who WAS that son?
A5) Charles Edward Stuart: also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Here’s a thought …
“The strong manly ones in life are those who understand the meaning of the word patience.” Tokugawa Ieyasu.
And a tune …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day …

*        Think I need to double check that, Olga: I came away from the Water Day Wikipedia with the distinct impression it’s been changed — or at least corrected — since I wrote the set.   The Wikipedia entry — at the time … ! — said 1994: whereas the Wikipedia entry for 22nd March said 1993.   Usually, I try and avoid those: it gives the site a chance to shake down the inconsistency …

†        They’re fantastic stuff, Debbi!   Although I can’t help but think Freddie was starting to look ill: he died four years after the single was released …

Q1) Japan
Q2) Go-Yōzei
Q3) Generalissimo
Q4) Tokugawa started a shōgunate period named for his family: that ruled from Edo Castle in Edo. That castle’s not in which modern city? I think there’s a typo (now not not) Tokyo
Q5) 1868 (although the last shogun is listed until 1867 so I’m a bit confused).
I had checked the actual website of the World Water Day and here http://worldwaterday.org/25-years-world-water-days/ it states they are celebrating the 25th anniversary this year (that would make it 1993). There is no theme listed for 1993 though, so I’m not sure if they started with the themes the year after and perhaps that’s the confusion. (No matter, just in case you want to include the question in the future). Anyway, it’s raining today. Oh, water…
Even with the digital downloads it’s difficult to keep up to date, but with physical products… No hope. Remember the clocks tonight!
