Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 22-1-2021: Howard’s Way.

22nd January, 2021.

Right … first things first, shall we?

I’ve finished my written and video review of Snowgums Films’ version of Troll Bridge.

And frankly?

It’s possibly the best Terry Pratchett adaptation I’ve seen.

What’s made my day … ?

Is simply that Snowgum Films, the company that made it?   Have politely thanked me on Twitter!

Yay!

~≈†≈~

Just as a quick thought … ?

I’ve just had another scam call from someone claiming to be from BT Openreach: trying to tell me my router was putting out rogue signals.

It took a while …

But my usual routine in these circumstances — talking endless twaddle about gibbons — seemed to work.

They hung up …

As a final thought, before we move on … ?

No Time To Die, the last film to star Daniel Craig as James Bond, has been postponed again: from April to October.

Heigh … ho … !

~≈†≈~

As an even final, final thought?   Here’s Troll Bridge: it’s worth watching!

~≈†≈~

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw  Olga*, Trevor† Mum‡, Edith^ and Debbiª putting in their answers: with Olga, Trevor and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum and Edith on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        22nd January, 1906, saw the birth of writer, Robert E. Howard.   What did the ‘E’ stand for: Edward, Ervin or Eowin?

Q2)        He was born, raised and lived much of his life, in which US state?

Q3)        He created which hero: Conan the Barbarian, Thrud the Barbarian or Asterix the Gaul?

Q4)        Howard also wrote Kull of where: Atlantis, Lemuria or Númenor?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Much of Howard’s work was published in which magazine: Astounding, Weird Tales or The Country Gentleman’s Pig Fertiliser’s Gazette?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        21st January is the feast day of Saint Demiana and the 40 Virgins.   In which church: the Coptic Church, the Roman Catholic Church or the Church of the SubGenius?
A1)        The Coptic Church: Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, in full.

Q2)        21st January, 2020, saw the sad death of Monty Python member, Terry Jones.   Three of the films he directed, were banned in Ireland.   The Meaning of Life and Monty Python’s Life of Brian were two of them.   What was the third?
A2)        Personal Services.   (The film was inspired by the — um — career of Cynthia Payne.   Turns out Luncheon Vouchers really were taken everywhere.)

Q3)        21st January, 1976, saw the birth of recovering Spice Girl, Emma Bunton.   What was her nickname, whilst a member of the Spice Girls?
A3)        Baby Spice.

Q4)        21st January, 1922, saw the birth of actor, Telly Savalas.   In which Bond film did he play Ernst Stavros Blofeld?

Q5)        Finally … ? 21st January, 1793, saw the execution of Louis 16th of where?
A5)        France.
Here’s a thought …
“I have never yet done a man to death by torture, but by God, sir, you tempt me!”
From Red Shadows, by Robert E. Howard. January 22, 1906 – June 11, 1936.
And an audiobook …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

As a final thought?   I’m very aware that Howard, much like H. P. Lovecraft, was a man of his time, a time that was 120 years ago.   I’m aware some of his views on race are not ones I share, nor ones considered acceptable, today.   I can only hope these are views he would not hold, today.

Feel free to share today’s video Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        That busker possibly saw you coming, Olga!   (There was one regular at one of the pubs I worked in: Idol’s Hot In The City always seemed to be playing when she walked in.   I can’t think why.)

†        Beer and footlong foot long hotdogs, Trevor?   Ye gods, the calories!   (The only thing unhealthier is a kebab!).   Obviously, ice hockey’s a bit different to old fashioned English Wrestling: the Grannies were nastier than a 300mph puck!

‡        Hello, Mum!

^        That’s odd, Edith, it should play ok!   It’s probably a licensing issue: that version might not have a US license.   It’s Brownie McGhee’s Freight Train Blues, if you’re interested.   (Can you let me know if Troll Bridge shows up, please?   It’s worth watching, even if you’re not a Terry Pratchett fan!)

ª        Oh, I hate that when it hates, Debbi!   Streaming issues, hey?   (Oh, does Troll Bridge show up?   It’s worth watching, if it does.)

My second sister Gillian used to go to Wrestling before she was even a mother. She is now a great Grandmother. The Wrestling used to be staged in the Scunthorpe Baths Hall made famous by the Jasper Carrott song.

It plays! I'll have to check it out. If it gets your approval, it must be a pretty good Pratchett adaptation. :)

1. Ervin
2. Texas
3. Conan the Barbarian
4. Atlantis
5. Weird Tales

The Red Shadows sounds quite melodramatic! "A dark scowl settled on his brow."

Chapter Two: The Layer of the Wolf! :)
