Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 22-3-2024 — World Water Day.

22nd March, 2024: World Water Day.

Right then … it’s officially Friday.

Pay day, in other words.

And … ?

Brentwood Council are useless!

I’m due to start paying my council tax, today.

On previous years bills?

There’s been a bar code: that the shop you pay the bill at, scans to send the money to the right place.

This year’s bills?   Sent to me on line?

Has a section — at the bottom of the bill — that says “Scan for Payment”.

And no bar-code.

How I’m supposed to pay that … ?

I don’t know.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

The day also saw Trevor§ leaving us a message.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        22nd March is World Water Day.   According to who: the EU, UN or AL?

Q2)        The theme for this year’s day?   Is ‘Water for’ … what: peace, quiet or charm?

Q3)        The day usually celebrates what: fresh water, sea water or brackish water?

Q4)        Water’s chemical symbol is H₂O.   This means it has two hydrogen atoms: and one atom of what?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Ice is frozen water.   Water in its gaseous state is which ‘S’?

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        The Napoleonic Code was adopted on 21st March.   Of which year: 1804, 1805 or 1806?
A1)        1804.

Q2)        Where was it adopted: Germany, France or Switzerland?
A2)        France.

Q3)        The Code is a set of what: civil laws, military laws or health and safety regulations?
A3)        Civil laws.   (It’s also known as a civil code.)

Q4)        It’s called the the Napoleonic Code as it’s named after the then First Consul.   Who was that Consul?
A4)        Napoleon Bonaparte.   (Napoleon was also known as Napoleon 1st.)

Q5)        Finally … ?   According to the opening section of the Code, laws could only be applied, if they’d been what: promulgated, partisan or pickled?
A5)        Promulgated.   Announced, in other words.
Here’s a thought …
“Water is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula H₂O.”
From the Wikipedia entry on water.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        I’ll have to keep an eye open, Olga, I really will!   About the only film I do want to catch, this year, is Dune Pt 2: we’ll have to see what I can make space for!

        Hello, Mum!

Some how, that’s not surprising, Debbi.   I don’t know if Quebec’s the same, though.

§        That’s where we were both wrong, Trevor!
Debbi got nine: as she got q9 wrong: mixing up Brazil — the defending champions — with of England, the tournament’s winner.   (Brazil were the holders at the tournament: having won in ’62.)
Mum actually got eight: putting 1983 for q1, instead of 1966, and ‘blackmail letter’ for q7, rather than — as Olga and Debbi put — ‘ransom demand.’

I hope you get to watch it. Oh, just to let you know. A friend from Portugal and her family are arriving in Barcelona on Sunday and will leave on Wednesday evening. Tbey're staying at an apartment (we don't have the space here, and her husband had lived in Barcelona a few years back), but we're likely to meet and perhaps do some stuff together if we get a chance, so if I don't turn up at some point in that period, I might be caught up with them, but I'll try and touch base in any case.

You cannot blame Brentwood council for the missing code. All of Brentwoods rate bills are produced and printed by Basildon council. As I pay by direct debit I do not think my bill has a bar code on it.

For my modest 3 bedroom abode I think I pay about 5 times your amount in the 10 payable months.
That is after the 25% single person alloweance.

Oh, I know it goes through Basildon, Trevor: the fact my bill has “Basildon Council” all over the envelop is a but of a clue!

But am blaming Brentwood Council, in part: after all, they could have chosen NOT to farm the job out to Basildon!
