Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 28th August 2024.

28th August, 2024.

Right then …

One peril of unemployment when you have chronic conditions … is that, occasionally, you have to have a meeting with a work coach.

My next one … ?

Is today: by phone, at 11:40.

I’m expecting it to be polite … but not necessarily productive*.

Hmmm …

It turns out my nephew fancies a new phone for Christmas.

Nice … bar the fact I’ve seen the price of the model he fancies!

Put it this way:
  • He doesn’t want the newly released Barbie phone.
  • He does want one that’s considerably more expensive than the new Mac I got, this year!

Kids, eh … ?

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with both scoring four out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        Belgrade was occupied on 28th August, 1521.   By whom: Ottoman Turks, Han Chinese or Kyivan Russians … ?

Q2)        Belgrade is now the capital of where: Serbia, Montenegro or Yugoslavia?

Q3)        Brian Wells died on 28th August, 2003.   After what went off: a bomb on his neck, a car bomb or a molotov cocktail?

Q4)        28th August is the feast day of Saint Moses the Black.   According to the Chalcedonian Church, he’s a patron saint of where?

Q5)        Finally … ?   During World War One, Italy declared war on Germany.   On 28th August of which year?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        27th August is Lyndon Baines Johnson Day: in which US state?
A1)        Texas.

Q2)        Johnson is one of only two US presidents from that state.   Who’s the other one?
A2)        Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Q3)        27th August is one of the feast days of Our Lady of La Vang.   La Vang is where: Vietnam, Thailand or Taiwan?
A3)        Vietnam.

Q4)        Titian died on 27th August, 1576.   He was an Italian what: poet, politician or painter?
A4)        Painter.

Q5)        Finally … ?   27th August is Independence Day in Moldova. What’s the capital of Moldova?
A5)        Chișinău.   (It’s pronounced kee-shee-NOW.)
Here’s a thought …
“As soon as [the police] slip out from under the firm thumb of a suspicious local tribune, they become arbitrary, merciless, a law unto themselves.”
From Chapter 3 of The Star King by Jack Vance, August 28, 1916 – May 26, 2013.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        The last meeting we had … ?   They suggested I do an Excel course.   I turned that down.   I don’t have the £119.99 for the retail version, nor do I have the ten gigabytes of drive space for the Mac version§, nor a fiver a month for the online version.   That would be a waste of space and money for something I’d only be using, once.

        Hello, Mum!

‡        From what I can gather, Debbi, both Bushes lived in Texas: but, according to this piece, Bush, Sr was from Massachusetts, Bush Jr from Connecticut …

§        The last time I checked, the Windows version of MS Office is some four gigabytes in size: versus the Mac version’s ten gigabytes.   If I’ve understood things correctly, there’s a lot of drivers, fonts and other bits and bobs the Windows version of MS Office doesn’t need: as they’re built into Windows.   The Mac version is larger: as macOS doesn’t ship with those Windows drivers.
