Actually, the irony is that Amazon has made it possible for me to make a living as an indie author. However, what they've done has (essentially) made Big Six publishers unnecessary.
Now, Amazon is trying to become THE retailer and THE publisher. They sign authors to publishing deals now, with releases in print and ebook formats. And they're doing this Lending Library thing, where you can't sell your books with other retailers. (For indie authors, it's only for 90 day periods and you can pick and choose your titles, but even so ...)
And I've publicly taken the position on my blog that we should support other retailers and indie booksellers. This is why I realized, uh oh ... I think I messed up. :-/
Plus I wanted to let everyone know that they could opt out. Because I didn't know. I just happened to figure it out.
So I blogged about it. Then, others could make an informed choice, too.
