The Daily Teaser — 7-1-2013

Oh …

Now that’s useful.

Looks like IMDb and Wikipedia both have iOS applications.

Handy.

Especially when you’re digging around for information: that on one screen, and what you’re doing on another … !

Actually … include cartoons, in that.

Apple usually hand out a 12 Days of Christmas app, around this time of year, that lets you download tons of freebies: including a couple of Toy Story cartoons.

As you can imagine, a certain nephew of mine was rather impressed with one of them: although he was just as impressed by a candlestick …

Hmmm …

Let’s get moving on, shall we?

~~~~~
Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi — all on her ownsome — putting in her answers.   Along with complementing the Tunnels and Trolls*º gang on their campaigning, she also managed to bag 6 out of 6.
Let’s see how she — and you — do with today’s questions, shall we?
Here they are, along with the ‘How To’, license and video …
Q1) 7th January saw Galileo Galilei first observe the Galilean Moons: in which year … ?
Q2) How many Galilean Moons are there … ?
Q3) Name any of them.
Q4) Which planet are they in orbit around … ?
Q5) How many moons does that planet have, all told … ?
Q6) The Galilean Moons are named after lovers of which Greek god … ?
Q7) And finally … Galileo named the moons after members of which Italian family … ?
And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 6th January is — famously — Epiphany: in Western churches, this celebrates whose visit to the Infant Jesus … ?   A1) The Magi: or Wise Men.
Q2) More to the point, how many visitors were there … ?   A2) 3 in Western churches, 12 in Eastern ones.   (No wonder they got divorced … )
Q3) 6th January, 1977, saw EMI fire the Sex Pistols: what does EMI stand for … ?   A3) Electric and Musical Industries.
Q4) 6th January, 1931, saw who file their last patent … ?   A4) Thomas Edison.
Q5) 6th January, 1912, saw which state admitted to the USA … ?   A5) New Mexico.
Q6) And finally … 6th January, 1540, saw Henry 8th of England marry his fourth wife: who was she … ?   A6) Anne of Cleves.
Enjoy those, everyone.
I’ll leave you with rather relevant quote from a certain well known astronomer …
“Names and attributes must be accommodated to the essence of things, and not the essence to the names, since things come first and names afterwards.”Galileo Galileiª.
And this tune …
Enjoy the day.
 *        I’ve got to admit, Debbi, as an ex-player of the game, I was impressed by that: even though I couldn’t put in, I could give it a mention: and feel pleased, at one remove, that something I’d enjoyed, as a teen in the 80s, was still being supported.
º        Oh, by the way … There’s this …
ª        Possibly the only astronomer to get a mention in a major rock song: or at least, I thought it did … …
