Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 26-8-2017

Hmmm …

It’s the start of the bank holiday weekend.

No problems, there, then.

Well …

I SAY that …

It’s the weekend of the Notting Hill Carnival: so we’re expecting to get a lot of calls at work, from the relevant local council.

And possibly a few mentioning Grenfell: as the deaths will be marked by Carnival goers.

Or, AND for the Greater London Authority: who we also take calls for.

~≈Ê≈~

But, to be frank … ?

That’s not what’s bothering me.

Oh, no.

Nope …

It’s the bank holiday weekend.

Which means there’s a rail replacement service,

I hate it, when the trains get replaced by buses.

The trip to and from work, especially given the traffic on these weekends?

Goes …

Very …

Slowly …

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring ten out of ten.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 26th August, 1978, saw Albino Luciano elected as Pope John Paul 1st.   In which year did he die in office?
Q2) Which volcano started erupting: on 26th August, 1883?
Q3) Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras was founded: on 26th August, 1914.   What is Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras: a football team, a baseball team, or a Kabaddi team?
Q4) Sir Robert Walpole was born: on 26th August, 1676.   Britain’s first Prime Minister was also its longest serving.   He held the position for how long: 10, 15 or 20 years?
Q5) Finally … 26th August is the feast day of David Lewis: one of forty English or Welsh catholic martyrs.   He was what: a Benedictine, a Jesuit or a Franciscan?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) The Voyager 2 probe made its closest approach to Neptune: on 25th August of which year of the 1980s?
A1) 1989.
Q2) Neptune is — strictly — the outermost planet of our solar system.   When what was named as a dwarf planet, in 2006?
A2) Pluto.
Q3) How far — on average — is Neptune from the Sun: 30.1 astronomical units, 40.1 astronomical units or 50.1 astronomical units?
Q4) How many moons has Neptune got?
A4) 14.
Q5) What’s the largest of those moons?
A5) Triton.
Q6) 1968 saw a team led by Edward Guinan discover what around Neptune?
A6) Rings.
Q7) The Voyager 2 spotted the Great Dark Spot: a giant storm on Neptune.   According to Hubble observations, the Spot had vanished by which year: 1993, 1994 or 1995?
A7) 1994.
Q8) Neptune’s existence was predicted by a French astronomer: called … ?
Q9) It was finally discovered by Johann Galle.   In which year of the 1840s?
A9) 1846.
Q10) Finally … how long is Neptune’s day: 12.11 hours, 14.11 hours or 16.11 hours?
As today marks the birth of Garbage front-woman, Shirley Manson?   I give you a song …

And a thought …
“It’s brilliant people still talk about something I made 33 years ago and they’re also talking about something I did last year. I can’t complain.”
Alison Steadman, born 26th August, 1946.
Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a nice day.

*        Yeah, the movie … well, what more can I tell you, Olga?   Beeping wise?   I have to admit to going to bed, least night … in an utterly quiet flat.   Just a bit unnerving.   (Trust me, you’d miss ’em if they weren’t there‡!)

†        Funnily?   It happened after I Googled myself in the library, Debbi.   Amazing what you can do with a computer‡, isn’t it … ?

‡        I’ve got my Mac set up to announce the time, every half an hour.   Very reassuring.

Q1) 1978 (33 days only. At least I guess he won’t be blamed for doing too many things wrong…)
Q2) Krakatoa
Q3) Football
Q4) 20 (a couple of months short of 21.)
Q5) A Jesuit. I caught this movie about San Ignacio de Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, when I was in Spain earlier this year. It is a rather bizarre movie but quite interesting. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5040624/?ref_=nv_sr_1 I was later checking it out and of course it was commissioned by the Jesuits but it is not the typical movie about life of saints I remember from my childhood. It intrigued me, especially because the Jesuits appear in so many historical movies (I really enjoyed Scorsese’s ‘Silence’, to name a recent one).
I hope the commute isn’t too bad. For what the radio was saying yesterday, it sounds as if it was going to be a particularly complicated one. I’m not planning on going too far…
Regarding noise, I have the same every time I come here after being in Barcelona with my mother, not only because of her being in the apartment, but because it is an apartment, so you always here the neighbours, and there's traffic, a bar below... I have several clocks around, but no comparison....
