Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 14th April, 2018

14th April, 2018.

Right …

It’s a Saturday: obviously.

Anyone looking at the calendar would be able to tell you that.

It’s also 14th April.

Again, the calendar would be helpful, there.

There’s also … been Allied airstrikes against selected targets in Syria.

Complete with an announcement from President Trump.

I’m …

Not sure I approve.

The three governments involved have kept things to an — apparent — minimum: by limiting strikes to alleged chemical weapons sites.

And?

Personally?

I don’t like the fact we’ve done this: just on general principles.

Nor do I like the fact we’ve done this with no apparent mandate from the United Nations.

And, while I can understand — indeed, approve of — the UK’s expelling Russian diplomats, post Salisbury, I can’t approve the fact that a British government is acting — on this — under US government instructions.

What’s more?   I think the President’s language — at least in the video announcement, above — to be very emotive.

Too emotive for this situation.

However?

What’s done is done …

I, personally?   Can only hope airstrikes don’t lead to further involvement.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video

Q4) 14th April is Dhivaehi Language Day: on the island nation it’s spoken on.   What IS that nation?
Q5) Finally … 14th April, 1968, saw student protests end in violence, where: East Berlin, West Berlin or Paris?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) The USA dropped the world’s largest non-nuclear weapon: on 13th April, 2017.   On a province in which country?
A1) Afghanistan.   (The bomb in question — the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast — has ALSO been nicknamed the Mother of all Bombs.)

Here’s a thoughtª …
“It was great being brought up in a Glasgow working-class tenement. It wasn’t miserable, and it wasn’t poverty stricken. It felt very safe, full of delights.”
Peter Capaldi, born 14 April 1958.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Yeah: World War Two could have been very different if the Allies had intervened, Olga‡.   I always had the feeling Spain didn’t take part, as it had just been through a disastrous Civil War.   But always wondered about its participation.   I’ve added that book to my shopping list, by the way.   It’s one for later, but looks interesting.   (Did you ever hear of a British comic book character called Judge Dredd?   The character was co-created by a Spainish artist, Carlos Sanchez Ezquerra, who took a lot of the initial look of the character post-Civil War Phalangist Spain.)

†        That it is, Debbi^.   Although, right now?   He seems to have taken measures.   I can’t help but think he’s knocked the election investigation down the headlines.   (Same over here: Salisbury’s a LOT further down the headlines …)

‡        Hmmm … thinking about it, and this is a very simplistic view, I know … but had we officially intervened against Franco’s regime, I think it may have delayed WW2: just so the Allies had a chance to rebuild their forces ….  (As an extra thought?   For me, it’s bad enough we’re taking action … but worse that we’re doing it: seemingly at US behest.)

^        Totally off beam, here, Debbi, but’s there’s inserted bits in today’s Teaser video …

ª        Cue the video …

Just as an extra thought?

I’ve had the BBC’s news channel, since finishing this post.

They inform me that the strike’s have just hit Syria military targets, but not Russian ones in Syria. Something I believe the Russian government has confirmed, although the piece went past quickly.

I’m grateful, if that’s the case.

Hitting Russian targets in Syria?

Could have nasty consequences.

Q1) Bridge builders (a great story)
Q2) Avignon
Q3) Uganda
Q4) The Maldives
Q5) West Berlin
I guess my thought is that if the allies (who were not the allies yet, but you catch my drift) had supported the government during the Spanish Civil War, as Germany and Italy were supporting Franco, they might have been hit hard and thought about it more before carrying on with their plans. Of course, it’s impossible to know, and I don’t think Hitler would have been easily stopped, but a defeat in time might have made others around him thing twice… Who knows? I fully understand and agree with your point about following other country’s dictates without support from the international community. Now that there are organisations in place, it is not right to gung-ho without their agreement. And if the organisations don’t work as they should, well, time to look into that.
The book looks at the phenomenon of the transition in Spain and how reluctant some sectors have been to look at the past and what really went on during Franco’s regime. Too much invested in not rocking the boat or looking at the links between those in power today and then.
I saw the news about Jeremy Hunt, yesterday. It keeps getting worse, as it does here.
Oh, and I knew Judge Dredd, but didn’t know about its co-creator inspiration. It makes perfect sense. Thanks for the info and have a good Saturday.
