The Mandalorian — Series 1 Chapter 5 — The Gunslinger — A Review

21st August, 2020.

It’s official!

Yes … I’ve had dinner!

It’s possibly the most exciting thing that’s happened to me, all day!

Hmmm …

I think I need to get out more, I really do!

At any rate … ?

It’s Friday, and payday.

So I’ve settled my major bills, and done some shopping: and bought a blu-ray on Amazon, along side some other bits.

And?

It’s Friday.

Which means one other thing: another episode of The Mandalorian, series 1.

Yes: it’s still enjoyable!

Chapter 5The Gunslinger — opens: with the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) defeats a pursuing bounty hunter in a dogfight: ending up having to re-start his ship in mid-space.

Then having to land in a repair shop run by mechanic Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris): a repair shop in the town of Mos Eisley, on Tatooine.

Peli’s not cheap: and his ship needs extensive repairs.

So the Mandalorian decides he needs to find work, quickly.

Asking in the nearest available cantina?   Sees the Mandalorian introduced to rookie bounty hunter, Toro Calican (Jake Cannavale*) , who is tracking elite mercenary and assassin Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen).

Toro … ?   Wants to join the Bounty Hunters Guild, more than he needs the money from the job …

So … ?

He’s prepared to make a deal … if they can catch up with their target …

Now …

Have I enjoyed another intergalactic space-western … ?

First thing’s first …

The Gunslinger’s taken us back to Tatooine: the planet where the original Star Wars started.

Back to a familiar world,  a familiar town — Mos Eisley — and a familiar species, the Tusken Raiders.

It’s shown us the Mandalorian interacting the Sand People through sign language, of all things.

Something that reminded me of the sign language the various Native American tribes had used, way back in the day.

So, yes: I’ve had a blast of a time, watching another wonderfully paced, sharply told sparse story: one that’s added extra details to a background universe I’ve not seen, before.

Yes, I know the various spinoffs have added details: but those spins offs haven’t been something I’ve followed.

For me?

This is new, fresh, enjoyable … and very welcome.

Frankly?   I’ll be watching another episode, next week!

*        Just in case the name’s familiar?   Yes: Jake’s the son of actor, Bobby Cannavale: who I know through Mr Robot.
