Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 20th November, 2020

20th November, 2020

Hmmm …

I was due a delivery, yesterday.

A couple of them, actually.

A blu-ray box set, and a USB stick in one.

And a laptop: for a training course I’m due to start next week, and be assessed for, today.

The laptop hasn’t turned up.

I think I have a problem.

~≈Ë≈~

I’m must admit, I’m mildly annoyed.

Not just by the disappeared laptop … but by a song.

Or, at least, by Radio One’s decision to play an edited version Fairy Tale of New York.

Because teens might be offended.

Can I suggest you buy the ’87 original from your favourite music provider?

Or, at least, look it up on Spotify or Youtube, turn up the volume, and play the bejeebers out of it!

Honestly, you’d think rock and roll wasn’t supposed to be offensive!

~≈Ë≈~

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Trevor†, Mum‡, Debbi^ and Edithª putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, Trevor and Edith on four and Mum on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video

Q1)        20th November, 1942, saw the birth of which former US Vice President?

Q2)        Who admitted to an affair on Panorama: on 20th November, 1995?

Q3)        Tipu Sultan was born on 20th November, 1750.   The Indian leader was also known as the Tiger of where: Mysore, Madras or Madhya Pradesh?

Q4)        20th November is the feast day of Saint Felec of where: Devon, Somerset or Cornwall?

Q5)        Finally … ?   20th November is Revolution Day, where: Vietnam, Mexico or China?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        19th November, 1493, saw Christopher Columbus land on an island then called Borinquen.   He renamed it San Juan Bautista.   What’s it now called?
A1)        Puerto Rico.

Q2)        The Nintendo Wii was released on 19th November, 2006.   It was the first video game console with what: a 4k display, motion controllers or a blu-ray player?
A2)        Motion controllers.

Q3)        19th November, 1905, saw the birth of musician and bandleader, Tommy Dorsey.   Which slide-based brass instrument did he play?
A3)        The Trombone.

Q4)        19th November is World Toilet Day.   In which year was it first held … ?
A4)        2012.

Q5)        Finally … ?   The General Secretary of the USSR, and the President of the USA, met on 19th November, 1985.   The President was Ronald Reagan.   Who was the General Secretary?
A5)        Mikhail Gorbachev.
Here’s a thought …
“All Presidents start out pretending to run a crusade but after a couple of years they find they are running something less heroic and much more intractable: namely, the presidency.”
Alistair Cooke, 20 November 1908 – 30 March 2004.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Feel free to share today’s video Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Oh, boy, aren’t there just a lot of Channels, Olga!   There’s a multitude of terrestrial ones, still, in the UK.   And I know what you mean about collectables.   My talking Dalek mug is the pride of my collection.
Good luck on the lesson front: have you thought about getting tested, yourself … ?   Might be handy …

†        Cheers, Trevor!   Actually, I could’ve sworn we had a touch of sleet, yesterday.   (Four out of five?   Is everything OK, Trevor?)

‡        Hello, Mum!

^        There’s usually a good few big drives on Amazon, Debbi.   And their deliveries are getting more reliable.   Unlike my landlords!   If it’s any help, my movie/TV show collection’s on an eight terabyte external drive, and I’ve had Time Machine pointed at a two terabyte external drive.   They’re getting cheaper.
Oh, you can delete Time Machine backups, as well: enter Time Machine, pick one of the back-ups, hit ‘Delete Backup’ in the Action menu, then feed in your password.   Hope that helps!

ª        That’s OK, Edith, we know what you meant.   And don’t worry about rain: we can find plenty for them.
Actually, have you read Terry Pratchett’s Last Continent?   It’s set in the Discworld equivalent of Australia: where rain’s a myth.   Until the main character turns up … !

Sorry to hear about the laptop. That was more important than the other things, but Amazon tends to be fairly reliable (although I know you've had some issues in the past).
You need to get a doctor's note to get tested here (at least at the moment, apart from in some locations where they did massive tests, but within certain ages) and I don't think I'd fit the criteria. They are talking about doing tests to the whole population, using the pharmacies/chemists as well (they have offered) although that is a bit controversial at the moment. They do a lot of tests already and I'm sure they'd be offered training. (I can't see much problem, as long as they took precautions and ensured that people with clear symptoms were dealt with by standard health services. After all, if they came through the door and were asymptomatic, they would be in contact the same, but with less protection). We shall see. From what the girl told me her mother would take the sample to the school, so that isn't particularly specialised or safe... I guess she's already been in contact regardless, but she should know something on Saturday.
The lesson... well, we survived. We mostly were practising some test questions, so that wasn't particularly problematic to do. I was trying to use Zoom's annotate feature but it proved tricky. I think simply highlighting the text might be easier.
I can't remember if I told you that she had done much better on her last test, so fingers crossed. I think she needs to practice plenty, and get used to reading the questions carefully, as sometimes doesn't fully grasp what they are asking (exam technique not only learning the content). I'm not sure she'll get to the level of being able to take the exam, but I hope she will improve some more.
Eventually, the BBC will only be able to play nursery rhymes or lullabies (thinking about it, some nursery rhymes are quite feisty)!

That’s a thought, Edith: we haven’t mentioned Australian English, yet! If anyone knows what a wrong is, I’d appreciate knowing …

A1 Joseph Robinette Biden Jr.
A2 Diana, Princess of Wales
A3 Mysore
A4 Cornwall
A5 Mexico

It just proved that I am not 100% perfect and occasionally suffer from number blindness.

I think many of our local Postmen are self isolating with covid-19. I think my area is only getting mail every other day. I am awaiting another addition to my collection of model railway beer wagons and it is a couple of days late. It was bought from eBay. Last week I bought a large bag of wild bird seed from Amazon and it was delivered by Amazon the next day.

I think Amazon should take over the Royal Mail from the current german owners.
