30th July, 2023: Nichelle.
You know, Friday was a stressful day.
Friday just gone, I should add.
I had a new set of utility meters put in.
Not something I found easy: but there you go.
At any rate … ?
I was due a delivery from a third party seller on Amazon, the same day: a tub of Marmite, so you know.
The seller’s are called (Daily Essentials), so you know.
The Marmite hasn’t turned up.
I was annoyed enough to contact the seller and complain.
According to them, the currier — their spelling — had successfully delivered it.
And that I should check with my family and neighbours.
I live on my own: and the neighbours had nothing.
The tub?
Is still listed as ‘running late’ on Amazon, I should add.
The sooner the tub turns up?
The happier I’ll be.

Oh, talking of the new meters?
And the spiffing new In Home Display that goes with them … ?
It’s got traffic lights on it.
Or, at least, a green, orange and red light.
As far as I can tell … ?
These are supposed to change: when your gas — or electricity — usage goes up and down.
That’s handy: I’ve already worked out which of my appliances — the washing machine’s fairly low energy, as is the iMac, but the spare desktop, and the oven, are hogs! — are good or bad.
OK, the traffic lights are a simplistic way of measuring these things.
But that — and the rough price guide it shows — are handy.

One last thing, before I move on … ?
I’ve finally managed to finish my reviews of “Under the Cloak of War”, the most recent episode of Star Trek Strange New Worlds.
This second season is very strong.
But?
This episode is very strong!
Check it out!
Let’s move on, shall we?
Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.
Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?
Q1) 30th July, 2022, saw the sad death of actress Nichelle Nichols. Who did she play in Star Trek?Q2) Famously, Nichelle was talked out of leaving the series. By whom: Dr Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy or Malcolm X?Q3) She played herself in which animated series: Futurama, Batman or Scooby-do?Q4) Nichelle played Nana Dawson. In which series: Heroes, Penny Dreadful or The Bad Batch?Q5) Finally … ? Nichelle worked on various recruitment projects with the US space agency. What’s that agency called?
Q1) 29th July, 1885, saw the birth of actress, Theodosia Burr Goodman. She was better known how: Theda Bara, Clara Bow or Jane Fonda?A1) Theda Bara. Her stage name was an anagram of the phrase, “Arab death”. Which got the studios over excited …Q2) 29th July, 1905, saw the birth of the US actress known as ‘the IT girl’. She was better known as whom: Theda Bara, Clara Bow or Jane Fonda?A2) Clara Bow.Q3) The Arc de Triomphe was inaugurated on 29th July, 1836. In which French city?A3) Paris.Q4) The First Hague Convention was signed: on 29th July, 1899. When was the Second Hague Convention signed: 1906, 1907 or 1908?A4) 1907.Q5) Finally … ? 29th July, 1968, saw Pope Paul 6th ban what: smoking, birth control or masturbation?
Here’s a thought …
“I was very blessed in always knowing what I wanted to do, and by the grace of God, I’ve been able to succeed in my chosen career. It’s just coincidental that the acting took off first over everything else.”Nichelle Nichols, December 28, 1932 – July 30, 2022.
Another thought …
“Momma! There’s a black lady on television and she ain’t no maid!”Whoopi Goldberg, speaking of the first time she saw Nichelle Nichols on TV. (Goldberg famously appear in the spin off series, as a result of being a fan of the show.)
And a song …
Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.
Decisions about scores are final.
Thank you for coming: have a good day.
* I know what you mean, Olga. It’s also why the engineer took the old meters away: apparently, they refusbish them, and install them in the homes of who don’t — or can’t — use an internet connection.
About my only worry is getting a signal over the (public) 5g network: both meters, and the in-home-display, connect through it.
† Hello, Mum!
‡ Onwards and upwards, Debbi, onwards and upwards! And, yes, I figured you’d find the Tom Baker site …
Oh, about episode 8, again? There’s a character called Buck Martinez in it: who’s the head of a field hospital Chapel and M’Benga work at. The actor that plays shim, Clint Howard? Is Ron Howard’s brother: and played Balok in “The Corbomite Manoeuvre”! I thought he looked familiar!

Q1) Uhura
Q2) Dr Martin Luther King (That would have convinced me as well).
Q3) Futurama
Q4) Heroes
Q5) NASA
Good to know there are some advantages to it. And somewhat reassuring to know that the new devices really used up far less energy, although not so good if one still has old stuff around (especially as there is also the move to repair things rather than keep piling up detritus and making more and more things that end up in landfills).
Congratulations on your new smart meters.
I have a similar display to yours.
The green turns to amber when I use the electric kettle or the electric toaster. As I am on a contract mine shows that days usage and cost.
Most days it is low but on a day like Saturday when I used both the washing machine and tumble drier it was toward the budget figure that is on my display.
It only took 7 appointment for the sub-contractors to Scottish Power (my joint power supplier) to install the new meters. The first 5 appointments were cancel about a week before the appointment due to lack of Engineers. It was Covid times. The 6 appointment was cancelled on the day because it was deemed too dangerous to work outside due to Storm Eunice.
When my meters were installed the engineer just gave me my display and a booklet because he could not spend too much time in door due to Covid.
If I go and look at my display just after midnight it shows a cost of £0.60 which is the daily standing charge.
