Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 16-6-2024 — Sussex

16th June, 2024: Sussex.

Sundays!

It’s officially Sunday!

Which means, of course, that we’re all filled with the joys of spring.

Yeah, right … !

At any rate … ?

I’ve finished both a written and video review of yesterday’s episode of Dr Who: and feel pleased about it.

Feel free to hit the ‘Like’ button!

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        16th June is Sussex Day.   The name, ‘Sussex’, comes from an Old English term that means South what: Angles, Saxons or Wold?

Q2)        Sussex is currently split into East Sussex and West Sussex.   What’s the county town of East Sussex?

Q3)        Sussex is currently split into East Sussex and West Sussex.   What’s the county town of West Sussex?

Q4)        What’s to the immediate south of Sussex: the English Channel, Kent or Madrid?

Q5)        Finally … ?   The Royal Pavilion is in Sussex.   Where, in Sussex: Brighton, Eastbourne, East Grinstead or Haywards Heath?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        15th June is Valdemar’s Day.   Where: Norway, Denmark or Sweden?
A1)        Denmark.

Q2)        15th June is the feast day of Saint Trillo.   He’s a saint who lived and worked, where: England, Ireland, Wales or Scotland?
A2)        Wales.   (I don’t know if his name’s pronounced TRILL-oh, TRITH-oh or THRITH-lo: but if I recall, the ‘LL’ is pronounced ‘THL’, in Welsh.)

Q3)        Bilbao was found on 15th June, 1300.   It’s in which country: Spain, Italy or France?
A3)        Spain.

Q4)        15th June, 1776, saw Delaware vote to become separate from where: Pennsylvania, Virginia or West Virginia?
A4)        Pennsylvania.

Q5)        Finally … ?   15th June, 2022, saw Microsoft retire what: Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office or Paint?
A5)        Internet Explorer.
Here’s a thought …
“The kingdom of Sussex emerged in the 5th century; during Roman Britain the area was occupied by the Regni tribe.”
From the Wikipedia entry on the county.
And an unofficial anthem …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Ooooh … those boxes — cajón, you say? — look very handy for small venues, Olga: at the Essex, the drummer’s kit could take up quite a bit of space!
And you mentioning the sound checks makes me wonder what the Catalan/Spanish equivalent of ‘one, two’, is.   The phrase is usually at sound checks, to calibrate the sound system: it’s used as the ‘T’ sound in ‘two’ is louder than the rest of the phrase, so helps the sound engineer adjust the volume of the mic.
Maria the keyboard player sounds a lot like Rhino Edwards.   He’s only been with Status Quo since 1986 … …

        Hello, Mum!

I’m saying nothing, Debbi!   :D   Did I mention I’d read his biography?   It’s a fascinating read!
Oh, did the package turn up?   Don’t watch my review, ’til you do!

Yes, cajón, and you're right. Usually, they say "un, dos, tres, probando, probando" (in Spanish) o "un, dos, tres, provant, provant" in Catalan (the numbers are pretty much the same. In Spanish you would say uno o un, it's a matter of taste (and there are some rules)... Tres is probably a good test. By the time I got there they were actually playing and they had some speakers oriented towards the stage, and those were the ones they were trying to get right. It was a bit complicated because most of them played different instruments, like Lluís, who played the accordion and a trumpet, so the sound varied quite a bit, but it sounded good. I only added a little bit of the performance to the news item, but I'll share it with you when it comes out (it should be on Tuesday), so you can hear. Of course, it was what I taped with a normal recorder, so it's quite limited, but it should give you a vague idea...
