Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 16-4-2025 — Orkney

16th April, 2025: Orkney

Did I mention I had a set of blood tests, yesterday?

At Brentwood Hospital?

I had a set of blood tests, yesterday: at Brentwood Hospital.

And … ?

Once they were done, I got as far as Brentwood High Street … before I realised I’d left my glasses at the hospital.

I could kick myself.

Except I’d possibly miss … !

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)       16th April is Orkney Day.   Orkney is a chain of islands off the coast of where: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales?

Q2)       The day also marks the patron saint of Orkney.   Who is that saint: Magnus the Martyr, Theobald the Brave or Sigismund the Clapper?

Q3)       A cathedral named for that Saint is in the chain’s largest town.   What is that town: Kirkwall, Stromness or Finstown?

Q4)       That town is on the largest of Orkney’s islands.   That island is called what: Mainland, Rousay or Hoy?

Q5)       Finally … ?   Orkney is a historical county of where: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        15th April, 1890, saw the birth of Percy Shaw.   His best known invention can be found, where: in the road, in the wall or in the window?
A1)       In the road: they’re the cat’s-eyes that guide drivers at night.   (According to one story, he invented them so he could drive home safely at night … from the local pub … )

Q2)        Snooker player, Joe Davis, was born on 15th April, 1901.   He played snooker.   And what else: English Billiards, pool or carom?
A2)       English Billiards.   (Davis is still the only undefeated Snooker World champion.   He’s also the first person to make a recognised 147 break.)

Q3)        15th April is the Universal Day of what: Culture, Sport or Art?
A3)       Culture.   The full title is Universal Day of Culture under the Banner of Peace.

Q4)        The first modern branch of McDonald’s opened on 15th April, 1955: in Des Plains, Illinois.   By whom: Maurice McDonald, Richard McDonald or Ray Kroc?
A4)       Ray Kroc.

Q5)        Finally … ?   The Marrakesh Agreement was signed on 15th April, 1994: by one-hundred and twenty-three countries.   It established what: the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organisation or UNICEF?
A5)        The World Trade Organisation, or WTO.
Here’s an observation …
“The plural name the Orkneys is also sometimes used, but is now considered incorrect.”
From the Wikipedia entry on Orkney.
And what I’m told is a traditional Orcadian piece…

The next ten question set will be on 23rd April: it has a World Book Night theme.

To avoid people copying your answers, they will be published tomorrow morning.

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!

Cheers, Debbi: I’ll pass that on to him!

I hope you've managed to retrieve the glasses. I have to be careful when I go to cover an item for the radio as I've forgotten the tape recorder and the camera more than once, and it isn't a problem if I'm going nearby, but if I have to cover something far away... I usually realise shortly after leaving the house, but...
Yesterday's excursion was interesting (we visited a centre where they process food for a chain of shops, and it is on the outskirts of a lovely village, although we had some trouble with the bus and we had to wait a long time for the food. But it was free, so...)
