The Daily Teaser — 23-7-2014

Hmmm …

You know, with little to do, I tend to rely on TV as a form of entertainment.

Obviously.

Well … TV … and radio.

The fact you can pick up digital radio is sort of nice: but not what I meant to tell you.

No, I meant to say that I’ve been following Channel Four series, Utopia.

Which is fantastic stuff.

It’s just a shame I missed the first series … !

~≈Ù≈~

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: and bagging four out of ten.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) 23rd July, 1926, saw Fox Films buy the patents for the Movietone system.   What did Movietone add to film: colour, sound or grey shades?
Q2) 23rd July, 1927, the IBC’s first radio station begin its broadcast.   In which country … ?
Q3) 23rd July, 1914: the Austro-Hungarian Empire issues an ultimatum, after the shooting of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand.   To which country … ?
Q4) 23rd July, 1952, saw the treaty that created the European Coal and Steel Community, come into force.   That community is considered to be an ancestor of what: the League of Nations, the European Union or the United Nations?
Q5) Finally … 23rd July, 1892, saw the birth of Haile Selassie 1st.   His title, as Ethiopian Emperor, literally translates as ‘king of’ … whom … ?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 22nd July saw England and Scotland agree to the Treaty of Union, 1707.   In which year?
A1) 1706.
Q2) The Treaty was agreed by the respective nations’ what … ?
Q3) The nation that was the result of the union was called what … ?
Q4) Who was King of England at the time of the Treaty of Union?
A4) No one: the monarch on the throne was Queen Anne.
Q5) More to the point, who was King of Scotland?
A5) Again: no-one.   Queen Anne was on that throne, too.
Q6) The negotiations were conducted at what was a theatre.  The theatre was called the Royal what: Cockpit, Bear-pit  or Snake-pit?
A6) The Royal Cockpit.   (The building’s currently used by the Foreign Office.)
Q7) The provisions of the Treaty Of Union meant that what stayed as Scotland’s Supreme Court?
Q8) What else got merged, as part of the Treaty of Union: the two nations’ Privy Councils, churches or Crowns?
A8) Privy Councils.   (The Church Of Scotland became an established church: but a separate one from the Church of England.   The Crowns had been united, in 1603, when James 1st and 6th acceded the throne of England.)
Q9) When did Ireland join England and Scotland in the United Kingdom: 1800, 1801 or 1802?
A9) 1801.
Q10) Finally … Scotland’s silver coinage was recast as a result of the Treaty, by the Royal Mint.   Who was Master of the Mint, at the time … ?
A10) Mathematician, physicist and alchemist, Sir Isaac Newton.
I’ll leave you with this song …

And this observation …
“And I also felt that no one in an audience could abuse me worse than the sort of abuse I had had at work as a psychiatric nurse.”
Jo Brand, born 23 July 1957.
Enjoy your day …

*        Sorry, Debbi, yesterday’s questions were a bit … um … evil … um … Basically, we were Great Britain: up until 1801.   We only became  the United Kingdom, after Ireland joined in 1801.   Then there’s the questions about who was King of England† at the time …

†        Queen Anne wasn’t a king: and would probably object to being called a king.   She was on the throne of England and Scotland when the treaty was signed, though …
