Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 8-6-2016

Hmmm …

You may or may not no the UK’s holding a referendum, in a couple of week’s from today.

Basically?   The question is whether we in the UK should remain in the EU.

As part of that, the government has been encouraging people to register to vote: whether by posting in their registration, or by doing it online.

By the dealing, last night.

You can practically SEE the problems, can’t you?

The site had huge problems, last night: as many tried to register, at the last minute.

Lord KNOWS what’s going to happen as a result of that.

But that could have been avoided, I think …

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: scoring four out of five in the process.   The day also saw Olga† letting know more of what’s happening for her.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 8th June, 1968, saw James Earl Ray questioned: in London.   About the death of which civil rights leader?
Q2) 8th June, 793, saw Vikings raid Lindisfarne Abbey.   Lindisfarne, itself, is off the coast of which English county?
Q3) 8th June saw former Cabinet Minister, Jonathan Aitken sentenced for Perjury.   In which year of the 1990s?
Q4) Margaret Bondfield became the first woman named to the UK’s Cabinet: on 8th June, 1929.   She was named to which post: Minister of War, Secretary of the Board of Trade or Minister of Labour?
Q5) Finally … 8th June, 1949, saw the original publication of Orwell’s 1984.   The book is set is a alternative 1980s, in a superstate called what: Eurasia, Eastasia or Oceania?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) The Petition of Right was formally approved by the King of England: on 7th June, 1628.   Which King was it: Charles 1st, Charles 2nd or Charles 3rd?
A1) Charles 1st.   (Charles 2nd was his son.   Assuming he uses the names Charles, Charles 3rd is the current Prince of Wales.)
Q2) 7th June, 2015, saw the sad death of actor, Christopher Lee.   Which of his films did he describe as his best: The Man With the Golden Gun, The Wicker Man or Dracula?
A2) The Wicker Man.
Q3) 7th June, 1929, saw the ratification of the Lateran Treaty.   Which city state did this establish?
Q4) The United Nations formally defined what was nicknamed the Blue Line: on 7th June, 2000.   The Line was the border between Israel and where?
A4) Lebanon.
Q5) Finally … Which French painter was born on 7th June, 1848: Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin or Paul Cézanne?
I’ll leave you with this thirty-two year old thought …
“The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in.”
From Chapter one of 1984, by George Orwell: first published on 8th June, 1949.
And this tune …

Have a nice day …

*        You’re right, there, Debbi!   Just don’t go anywhere NEAR ratemypoo.com … ! No, REALLY, don’t!   (Oh, sorry about marking you down on the Holy See answer: but, if I’ve understood it, they’re two separate things.   If I’ve understood it, Vatican City is the state set up by the Lateran Treaty, and the Holy See is the church’s governing body … and has its HQ in Vatican City.   Don’t you just love a bloody picky legal distinction?)

†        I’ll keep my fingers crossed it’s soon, Olga: waiting for medical treatment is so frustrating, isn’t it … ?   The Mac version of Word doesn’t work that way, Olga, as far as I know.   The shortcut I mentioned, yesterday?   Would be the default, whatever app you used.   You’d have to change it in Word’s Preferences.   (The Mac originally shipped with the one button mouse: and uses ctrl and a mouse click, instead of a right click.   Where you’d use ctrl and c to copy something?   I’d use command () and c.)   Oh … My GP’s recommend a low FODMAP diet: BOY, I’ve got a job of work to do …

I still don't have a Mac, Paul, so my Windows is a windows for PC but there are many sites that share combinations of keys to produce some symbols. To do ñ, for example, I do ALT (keep pressing) and then press 0241 in the numerical keyboard but there are other combinations.
My mother is having her catheterism this morning, although as she'll be the fifth person to go in we don't know what time it will be. Wish her luck (and me).
Be well and good luck with the diet. I'm big on fruit and vegetables so I'd find it quite confusing and complicated (although I'm starting to discover that I can't eat as much fruit as I used to either...)
