Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 3rd December, 2019.

3rd December, 2019.

Right then …

I’m up early … again.

For the second day of the course I’m on.

Day one, yesterday?

Was mostly about filling in the paperwork.   And doing some online numeracy and literacy testing.

On Windows based laptops.

I’m a Mac fan: you can imagine how I felt, can’t you … ?

On a more serious note?

Much as I’d rather not use a PC, I’m fairly certain that — in using them — I’m going to need to be a touch cautious.

These are shared machines: normally used in an academic setting*, and running an older form of Windows that’s due to be replaced.

And with student’s work on them.

I’m going to need to be careful to not look at that.

And am quietly thinking the college’s IT department could possibly set up the guest accounts on the machines we’re using to not show those.

Or, at least, make sure tutors encourage students to not keep their work on the custom guest accounts.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga scoring five out of five, and Debbi on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 3rd December, 1911, saw the birth of Italian composer, Nino Rota.   Rota composed the original, instrumental version of Speak Softly Love: for which film?
Q2) The 21st state to be admitted to the USA was admitted on 3rd December, 1818.   Which state was it?
Q3) Charles Dillon Perrine discovered Himalia on 3rd December, 1904.   Himalia is a moon of which planet?
Q4) Singapore adopted its flag: on 3rd December, 1959.   How many stars are on the flag?
Q5) Finally … ?   3rd December, 1988, saw outrage: when the UK’s then Health Minister claim most British eggs were infected with salmonella.   Who was that Health Minister?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 2nd December is the National Day of the United Arab Emirates.   Name any one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates.
A1) Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah or Umm Al Quwain.
Q2) 2nd December is also the National day of which Asian nation: Thailand, Laos or Cambodia?
A2) Laos.
Q3) 2nd December is the (Orthodox) feast day of Habakkuk.   According to several sources, he’s what: a prophet, judge or king?
A3) Prophet.
Q4) 2nd December, 1848, saw Franz Joseph 1st become emperor of where: Germany, Hungary or Austria?
A4) Austria.
Q5) Finally … ?   The government of the UK devolved power to where, on 2nd December, 1999: Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or Cornwall?
Here’s a thought …
“When I’m creating at the piano, I tend to feel happy; but — the eternal dilemma — how can we be happy amid the unhappiness, of other?   I’d do everything I could to give everyone a moment of happiness.   That’s what’s at the heart of my music.”
Nino Rota, 3 December 1911 – 10 April 1979.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        The course is being run by a college in Berkshire.   (The machines are using a version of Windows that’s due to be replaced in 2020.   I’m assuming the college hasn’t updated, yet, on cost grounds.   That’s … well … )

†        Hang on, Pete?   Who’s Pete?   Olga, you’re leaving me for Pete!!!!!!!!!   I’m joking, I’m joking!   At any rate, cheers for that: I’m going to need it, I think.   And, yes: that’s a genuine quote from Ms Spears.   She doesn’t help herself, sometimes.   Did you ever hear her quote about foreign travel?
“The cool thing about being famous is traveling. I have always wanted to travel across seas, like to Canada and stuff.”
‡      Cheers, Debbi: oh … I’ve actually found Apple’s own help page, as well!   It’s a bit more coherent than I am!

Sorry, Paul! There's another blogger I talk (write) often to, called Pete, and I guess I got my Ps confused! (I wonder if I've called him Paul as well). The issue of the computers is worrying indeed, not so much the old Windows (we were well behind on software at the NHS when I was working there), but perhaps they need a course on privacy and data protection themselves!
