Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 2-11-2020: Sleeping Satellites

2nd November, 2020.

Right …

I’ve got a meeting, today: by phone.

With my case worker from the Shaw Trust, the people who run the Work and Health programme I’m on.

Which is all good.

Quite what will happen with them, under the upcoming lockdown?

I don’t know.

~≈†≈~

Which sort of brings me to another point.

As you may or may not know, England is to enter a second Lockdown on Thursday.

One aspect?   Is that non-essential retail premises are to close.

Does that include libraries?

I don’t know.

I’m assuming it will, though.

That’s going to be tough on those of us who rely on them for ’Net access.

As I’ve said, so many times before: those of us who can’t afford an at home connection rely on the library to get online.

To access services, to job hunt, to pay rent.

If we can’t access the library, where do we go?

~≈†≈~
Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum†, Debbi‡ and Edith^ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, Mum on four, and Edith on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video

Q1)        British Satellite Broadcasting, and Sky TV, merged: on 2nd November of which year of the 1990s?

Q2)        British Satellite Broadcasting used an aerial shaped like a what?

Q3)        What was the new company called: BSkyB, BSquareB or BSquirrelB?

Q4)        The new company uses a satellite dish to receive a signal.   That dish is usually what shape: parabolic, hyperbolic or elliptic?

Q5)        Finally … ?   All the companies are know as what TV: digital TV, terrestrial TV or satellite TV?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        1st November is World what Day: World Vegan Day, World Bison Day or World Frog Day?
A1)        World Vegan Day.   (World Frog Day is in March.   National Bison Day is marked only in the US: on either the 1st or 2nd of November.)

Q2)        1st November, 1952, saw the USA test a what: atomic bomb, thermobaric bomb or thermonuclear bomb?
A2)        The thermonuclear bomb.   (It’s also called a hydrogen bomb.)

Q3)        The Maastricht Treaty took effect: on 1st November, 1993.   What did it establish: the United Nations, the European Union or the City-State of Ankh-Morpork?
A3)        The European Union, or EU.

Q4)        1st November, 1887, saw the birth of English painter, L. S. Lowry.   He was born in which English county?
A4)        Lancashire.

Q5)        Finally … ?   American composer and lyricist, Jim Steinman, was born on 1st November, 1947.   He produced This Corrosion: for which English band?
A5)        The Sisters of Mercy.   (Just in case you want to wear lots of black leather … ?   Here.)
Here’s a thought …
“The necessity for better satellite television programming than TVRO arose in the 1980s.”
From the Wikipedia article on satellite television.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Feel free to share today’s video Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Drat!   You’re right, Olga, it does!   What can I tell you?   Apart from offering you my apologies!
You’re also right about the lock down: it’s dispiriting.   I expected to be able to find a job, this year: however good or bad.   But … ?   Covid-19 has put paid to that.   (One of my neighbours?   The chap I refer to as Alan, in the Phoenix piece?   Is going to have issues, if the library shuts, he has no access to the internet, indoors.)

†        Morning, Mum!

‡        You’re right, Debbi, mentioning the UN always gets a laugh!   On a more serious note … ?   Have you seen today’s third question … ?   🤣

^        My pleasure, Edith: it’s always nice to have you here!   (Oh, did I mention I’ve been watching some of The old David Tennant episodes of Dr Who, whilst I’ve been editing the next set of Teaser videos?   It’s interesting to see them, again.)

Not to worry. I just wondered because I changed the answer based on the article, that for once seemed to have reasonable references. Yes, I know what you mean about access. Here the libraries are not closed (yet. I've read somewhere that we might be heading for a tougher lockdown within the next 20 days or so), but they are only open to collect and lend books (I think prebooked online), so that is not an option for somebody with no access to internet. I assume job centres are still open, because people are still allowed to work, but I don't recall reading anything about it, and I guess the queues would get tremendous, and having to clean after every use... It might be that they wouldn't provide that service either.
