Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 7th November, 2020.

7th November, 2020.

I’ve got to admit, the start of the day … ?

Sees me feeling rather saddened.

I got news yesterday that Phil — an old school friend — had died, this week: of liver cancer.

He was ten days younger than me.

He’d developed arthritis in his early teens: and had needed at least one kidney replaced as a result of years worth of medication for the condition.

More recently?

He’d started dialysis.

I’m …

I’m tempted to use the word devastated.

But will settle for extremely saddened.

Phil was that rarest of things: a genuinely nice, decent man.

The fact we’d lost touch, over the years?

Is now compounded: by a permanent loss.

I can only offer a prayer or two.

And my condolence to his family.

~≈😢≈~

You know, I’m working on another piece for Phoenix FM: and planning to write about crime in the area.

I’m possibly going to have to do a list of tips, at some point.

Including some sort of cyber tips.

I know that’s going to be relevant.

Another old friend managed to get hacked, last night.

I became aware of it … when she apparently sent me a couple of videos …

That lead to a fake Facebook* login page.

I’ve done my usual thing: and heavily suggested she change her password.

Any other suggestions … ?

Would be appreciated.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Trevor†, Olga‡, Mum^ and Debbiª putting in their answers: with Olga, Trevor and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video

Q1)        If you’re born on 7th November, you’re a what: Sagittarius, Scorpio or Capricorn?

Q2)        If you’re born on 7th November, 2020, you’re a what: Rat, Ox or Tiger?

Q3)        Which US State granted women the vote: on 7th November, 1893?

Q4)        The world’s oldest journal was first published on 7th November, 1665.   What is it: the Bombay Post, London Gazette or Berliner Zeitung?

Q5)        Finally … ?   7th November, 1954, saw the birth of writer, Guy Gavriel Kay.   He helped Christopher Tolkien work on which J. R. R. Tolkien book: The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings or The Silmarillion?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        Tammy Baldwin became the first openly gay person elected to the US Senate: on 6th November, 2012. At the time of writing, she’s the junior Senator for which US State?
A1)        Wisconsin.

Q2)        Composer, John Phillip Sousa, was born on 6th November, 1854.   His The Liberty Bell, was used as the theme tune to which British comedy show?
A2)        Monty Python’s Flying Circus.   (It’s ALSO the Battle Song of Saint Trinians.   Someone tell Girls Aloud … )

Q3)        Charles 2nd of Spain was born on 6th November, 1661.   He was the last Spanish ruler from which dynasty: the Habsburgs, Bourbons or Hannovers?
A3)        The Habsburgs.   (They’s also called the Hapsburgs, in British English.)

Q4)        6th November, 1964, saw the birth of Rugby player, Mike Brewer. Which version does he play: Rugby league or Rugby union?
A4)        Rugby union. (He played for the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, so you know.)

Q5)        Finally … ?   6th November, 1946, saw the birth of actress, Sally Field.   In which film did she play Mrs Gump?
A5)        Forrest Gump.
Here’s a thought: that seems vaguely relevant …
“When power is gone the memory of power lingers.”
From Tigana, by Guy Gavriel Kay, November 7, 1954.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Feel free to share today’s video Teaser.

Have a good day.

*          Basically, the URL for Facebook’s login page should read https://www.facebook.com

†        He’s causing a bit of a stink, isn’t he, Trevor?   It’s Spitting Image I feel sorry for, they’re going to run out of Donald Trump gags!

‡        Too many clothes, Olga?   That’s a first!   If I’ve understood it correctly, mos modern washings machines have quite a big capacity!
You’re right … a top loader could be a better option!   If you’ve got a scrap yard near you, it might pay you to have a visit!

^        Hello, Mum!!

ª        It makes about as much sense as the Election, Debbi!   😂

Well, the washing machine saga continued well after I posted my comment. It stopped and started a few more times, once insisting it was some kind of electrical failure (the engineer came back again to check and suggested if it kept going on we should call the company, as they should replace it), and then, after he'd opened it up, ensured it was even (it's on the patio, and thanks to my father's tiling work it isn't exactly a flat surface), he left it washing, and after a while, it started making noise again and yes, the drum door was open again. So we called him back, bless, he came and finally discovered that there was a piece of cloth stuck at the bottom that kept catching and pulling the door open. The weirdest thing is that I've never seen that piece of cloth in my life, and my mother doesn't recall it either, so exactly where it has come from, it's a mystery.
On a more sort of positive note, he also noticed that there was water leaking from a pipe right next to the washing machine. Yes, not fantastic news, but at least something that can be sorted and prevent further damage. (So far the duck (duct) tape is doing the job. What a great invention!)
Your advice to your friend is the best I can think of. Sometimes things get complicated because many sites offer the possibility of using a social media account to sign on, but once she changes her password that should no longer be possible.

I am so sorry about your friend.

Changing the subject. I think a list of cyber tips is a wonderful idea!

The USA is going to stay a democracy. Hooray!

It is a bit like Ground Hog day. Every time I open my browswer and it goes to my home page (BBC News Page) I am getting the same banner and count. It has not changed for a couple of days at least. I think that the US has been pot into stasis like Lister in Red Dwarf.
