Yes, he did. He started out in (essentially) a clerical position. He took courses in computer science and ended up becoming the library's spam expert. It was his job to protect the system from being compromised.

The reason he chose to work at the LOC was so he could be close to their genealogy collection. He was always going there to do research. By working there and living close by, he was like a kid working in a candy store. :)

You know what's interesting? I was watching Lord of the Rings, and I thought, "This is just like Star Wars. I think George Lucas ripped off J.R.R. Tolkien!"
