The Daily Teaser — 26-4-2016

Oh, well, that seemed to work …

I mentioned, yesterday, I was having a problem with my hands: with quite a bit of dry skin.

Thankfully, though?

I managed to pick up a tub of skin cream from my local branch of Boots: a rather strong, medicated one.

It does seem to have worked rather well.

My hands are definitely felling a touch better!

It’s all good!

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) The SS Ideal X left port: on 26th April, 1956.   The ship was one of the world’s first what: oil tanker, container ship or aircraft carrier?
Q2) William Shakespeare was baptised: on the 26th April, 1564.   In which Warwickshire town?
Q3) Paul von Hindenberg was elected as president of which European country: on 25th April, 1925?
Q4) Which Spanish football club was founded on 26th April, 1903?
Q5) Finally … 26th April, 2005, saw Syria withdraw its garrison.   From where: Libya, Lebanon or Jordan?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 25th April, 1983, saw the Pioneer 10 probe fly by which (then) planet?
A1) Pluto.   (Pluto has since been re-classified as a dwarf planet.   Bit of a dog, that … )
Q2) 25th April, 1959, saw the opening of the Saint Lawrence Seaway.   Connecting North America’s Great Lakes to what: the Atlantic or the Pacific?
A2) The Atlantic.
Q3) Robert Noyce was granted the patent for the integrated circuit: on 25th April, 1961.   These circuits are occasionally known as micro … what?
Q4) Nicolas Pelletier became the first person executed by guillotine: on 25th April, 1792.   What was he: a forger, highwayman or murderer?
A4) A highwayman.
Q5) Finally … the final part of the Obelisk of Axum was returned to its home country: on 25th April, 2005.   What IS that country?
A5) Ethiopia.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.”
Marcus Aurelius, 26 April 121 – 17 March 180 AD.
And this tune …

Have a good day …

*        Oh, well, if they were good enough for Pacino … !   You know, I wouldn’t’ve minded seeing Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Olga: in a live context.   The guy had quite a reputation.   (Did you ever see The Boat That Rocked?   He crops up in that, as the film’s equivalent to Emperor Rosko.)

†        Everything OK, Debbi?   Someone was rather quiet, yesterday!   (Oh, BBC Four broadcast Forbidden Planet, yesterday.  It’s classic 50s SF.)

Q1) Container ship
Q2) Stratford-upon-Avon (I quite like it although it gets very crowded)
Q3) Germany
Q4) Atlético de Madrid

No, I haven't watched the Boat that Rocked. I've heard about it but haven't caught up with it yet. He was very good in True West. It's a very interesting play about two brothers, one a bit of a lowlife, the other one a screenwriter for Hollywood. During the play the end up changing their roles completely. It's usually performed with the main actors (there's only another character, the mother, who only appears very briefly) swapping parts every day. The day we saw it Philip S. Hoffman was playing the screenwriting brother, that seemed to me the logical choice (I'd seen him play a writer before. He was also a screenwriter in Mamet's 'State and Main'. Yes, I always bring Mamet up. After all, I wrote my PhD on his movies), but I suspect it would have worked perfectly well the other way round. Sam Shepard is very interesting (both as playwright and as an actor).
I'm having some windows replaced in my house tomorrow, one of them right by the phone-data point so I don't think I'll be on the internet much tomorrow...
