Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 1-8-2016: The Centennial State

I think we can say it’s official.

I’ve now stopped writing the Teasers for the Brentwood Gazette.

The editor, Alan, told me — and has reiterated — that they want to keep them: but only as an online presence.

And that the Teasers will no longer feature in the print edition.

Which is why I’m withdrawing them.

Going on the feedback I’ve had from Gazette readers, the Teasers audience are mostly older: and ones prefer the print version, rather than the online version.

Yes: I’ve enjoyed writing them.   Yes, they’ve received very good feedback.   Yes, having them there has nudged Nik Nak’s Old Peculiar up Google’s famous ranking.

And, yes, both Gazette staff and readers have been very supportive of them, generally.

But I honestly believe there is no point in continuing them, unless the Weekly Teasers are available both in print, and online: and thus getting maximum exposure.

I hate to do it, but feel I must.

As a final thought?

If you wish to complain about this — and frankly, I’d love it if you did — please leave me a comment.

But ALSO feel free to voice an opinion to the Gazette, itself.

By phoning them on 01245 602700, emailing them on editorial@gazettenews.co.uk or alan.woods@gazettenews.co.uk, or by writing to the editor, at:

1st Floor,

Thanking you.

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: scoring five out of five in the process.   The day ALSO saw Olga† letting us know she’s feeling confused about bank holidays.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s themed questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) Colorado was admitted to the USA, on 1st August, 1876. Was it the 37th, 38th or 39th to do join?
Q2) What’s Colorado’s capital city?
Q3) At 14, 440 ft, what’s the state’s highest mountain?
Q4) Apparently, Boulder, Colorado, has more master sommeliers per capita, than any other US city.   What IS a sommelier?
Q5) Finally … 2014 saw Colorado open the first US shops: that stocked legally available what?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 31st July, 1962, saw trouble at a rally organised by which fascist politician?
Q2) 31st July, 1970, was Black Tot Day: the day the UK’s Royal Navy issued its last rum ration.   The rum was usually turned into grog: by mixing it with what?
A2) Water.   (A related drink is bumbo: which, apparently, George Washington used, to bribe wavering potential voters.)
Q3) Which writer was — literally — pilloried, on 21st July, 1703?
Q4) Christchurch, in New Zealand, was chartered: on 31st July, 1856.   Is Christchurch on New Zealand’s North or South Island?
A4) South Island.
Q5) Finally … Georgia joined the United Nations: on 31st July, 1992.   Up until 1991, Georgia had been part of what?
A5) The USSR, or Soviet Union.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“The conditions in the pure air of the Colorado Mountains proved extremely favorable for my experiments, and the results were most gratifying to me.”
Nikola Tesla.
And one of Colorado’s state songs.

Have a good day.

*        Actually, Debbi, can I refer you to Nik Nak’s Tenth Law?   “Time goes past at one second per second.   Git, isn’t it … ?”   I think that covers time flying … …

†        You’re confused, Olga?   So am I … !   I could’ve sworn today’s a bank holiday: but, according to the government’s own website?   It’s on the 29th August!   I THINK I need a new brain … !

You're right. Here it says next week is a bank holiday...
http://bankholidays-2016.co.uk/
I'll investigate further.
Q1) 38th
Q2) Denver
Q3) Mount Elbert
Q4) A trained and knowledgeable wine professional (the husband of a good friend of mine is a sommelier)
Q5) Recreational marijuana (it was January though…)
Sorry to hear about the Gazette. I guess it’s true that the type of clients for digital and paper versions is different but I think you’re right. Let’s hope there are better news soon (nothing here either)

Checking more the bank holiday situation, today is bank holiday in Scotland and the last Monday of the month is a bank holiday in the UK but not in Scotland. In May there are two bank holidays but only one in August, it seems...

I wouldn't get it from Marty, if I were you! :)

I like your laws. They have a kind of Douglas Adams feel to them. :)

1. 38th
2. Denver
3. Mount Elbert
4. a wine professional or wine steward
5. marijuana or, to be more specific, recreational marijuana
