Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 23-12-2017: The Transistor

Hmmm …

It’s the 23rd of December: and, therefore, a couple of days short of Christmas Day, itself.

Quite how I fell about the day … ?

I don’t know.

I think the older I get, the less important it feels.

Apart from the fact I have a nephew.

Jude, bless him?

Is  going to be get MORE Lego than he knows what to do with.

Depending on how creative he’s feeling …

~≈†≈~

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video

Q1) The Transistor was first demonstrated: on 23rd December of which year of the 1940s?
Q2) In which famous labs?
Q3) The transistor can manipulate electrical signals.   Because it’s made from what: conductors, semiconductors or insulators?
Q4) Transistors can be used to increase an electrical signal.   In other words, they do what: amplify, sublimate or acclimatize a signal?
Q5) Finally … transistors can turn an electrical on or off.   In other words, they can act as what ‘s’?
Here’s yesterday’s persistently unthemed Teaser

Q1) The Lockheed SR-71 first flew: on 22nd December, 1964.   The reconnaissance plane was also known as what: the blackbird, black ball or black eyed pea?
A1) The Blackbird.
Q2) Which Berlin landmark was re-opened to the public: on 22nd December, 1989?
A2) The Brandenburg Gate.
Q3) Nicolae Ceaușescu try to flee the capital of his country: after being overthrown on 22nd December, 1989.   Which country was Ceaușescu the dictator of?
A3) Romania.
Q4) J. Arthur Rank was born on 22nd December, 1888.   His film company’s symbol was a man playing a what?
A4) Gong.
Q5) Finally … 22nd December, 2003, saw a British hostage released by his captors.   They rebels from which South American country?
A5) Colombia.
Here’s a thought …
“A basic truth that the history of the creation of the transistor reveals is that the foundations of transistor electronics were created by making errors and following hunches that failed to give what was expected.”
William Shockley, one of the transistor’s creators.
And a tune …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good Transistor Day … !

*        Hmmm … Do either of the two separatist parties have members in the main Cortez, Olga?   Stikes me having a lot of seats, there could be useful!   (There’s a line from one character in William Gibson’s Neuromancer to the same effect: “I never did like to do anything simple when I could do it ass-backwards.”)   We’ve got something similar, here, as well: my block’s only got four floors, and my safe place neighbour?   Are only one floor up!

†        Hmmm … Is it the computer, Debbi, or just the browsers?   They probably just need the history clearing, a cache clean or dumping the cookies.   Will either of these links help?   This one is for Safari.   This one’s for Firefox.   Oh, and Northern Soft do a system cache cleaner that’s VERY easy to use.

Q1) 1947
Q2) Bell Laboratories
Q3) Semiconductors
Q4) Amplify
Q5) A switch
Some, but not many. Cortes... I meant a place where you can get it delivered to locally, but not a neighbour (they deliver to several shops and post offices nearby, usually some that have long opening hours, and it's more convenient than having to bother people sometimes).
Take care.

Thanks, Paul! Boy, this teaser takes me back to my early days in college, when I studied to be an electronics technician. No lie! I was a techie for a while! :)

1. 1947
2. Bell Laboratories
3. semiconductors
4. amplify
5. a switch

I was even a lab assistant in the electronics lab at my community college. I was one of three women in the class! Can you believe? :)
