Aquaman — A Review

14th May, 2019.

Yes: I think I’m right.

It’s a Sunday night: and frankly?

Frankly it’s been one of those Sunday nights where I could’ve been staring at four walls, doing nothing …

Or trying some of the sillier games on Facebook.

Don’t ask.

Really, don’t ask: 2048 Hexagon Elimination is just a bit too addictive … !

Ahem …

!

At any rate, it’s a quiet Sunday night.

One where I fancied a film.

Yes: I’ve finally given up and watched the James Wan film that is …

Aquaman …

~≈§≈~

Aquaman opens in 1985: when lighthouse keeper, Thomas Curry (Temuera Morrison*) rescues Atlanna of Atlantis (Nicole Kidman) from a storm.

And soon falls in love with the Atlantean queen: becoming the father of her son, Arthur.

It’s not long, however, before Atlanna is kidnapped by forces loyal to the King: who’s determined to marry his bride.

We flash forward to now.

To a now where Arthur — known to the world, only as Aquaman — is rescuing a Russian submarine from pirates: and killing the pirate chief to a watery fate.

Only, on returning home to his father?   To find Princess Mera (Amber Heard) of Atlantis is on his door step.

It seems the underwater city is threatened by King Orm’s (Patrick Wilson’s) policy of waging war on the surface world.

Mera believes the only person who could solve Atlantis’s problems is the TRUE king of Atlantis: Orm’s older brother…

Arthur …

Arthur … ?

Really isn’t keen.

He can smell dead fish a mile away …

Now …

“Good, bad or indifferent, Paul?”

I hear you ask …

Frankly?

I’d say good.

OK: possibly Black Panther has covered this whole “Returning King” theme before: slightly better, in fact.

Possibly quite a bit better.

And in about 10 minutes less time, now I think about it.

Granted … in one sense Aquaman is nothing new.

Nothing necessarily original.

On the other hand?

Aquaman’s not necessarily telling us it’s going to be the bee’s extremely literary, knees.

Something fresh, or original, or ground breaking

Aquaman is just setting out to give us a likeable hero, a villainous villain, and an entertaining story.

It does that very well.

*        I saw him in Once Were Warriors, many years ago: and remember being taken with both it, and his performance.   I should maybe revisit it …
