I don’t suppose you’ve seen a 1992 film called Candyman, have you? It was one of those fantastically memorable horror films that didn’t get too much coverage, and one I feel I have to re-watch, at some point.
There’s a new version out, this year.

Yes. I got the impression that he learned on the job, because when I was telling them (his wife is a chef, so she's not bad to know either) about the University of the People he told me he had been thinking about trying to study for some formal qualifications, but, as we all know, as wonderful as they are, books can't teach us everything (neither can degrees, for that matter).
