Westworld — Series 2 — Episode 1 Journey into Night: A Review

3rd April, 2019.

Hmmm …

Drifting …

There’s possibly a lot one can say about drifting, right now.

The first thing I want to do, though … ?   Is something for my fellow Mac users.

You may remember me mentioning that — in the wake of the update from one version of my operating system, to the next — that the update had affected iMovie.

Making it render videos extremely slowly: especially when the animated text featured was used.

Yesterday and today?

Yesterday and today, however, we seem to have improvements.

For starters, Apple released an update for iMovie: taking it from 10.1.10 to 10.1.11.

Which didn’t seem to do much.

This morning … ?

We got the OFFICIAL little red dot on my System Preferences icon.

Meaning I had an update to the operating system, itself, available.

Effectively?   My machine was getting updated from macOS 10.14.3 to 10.14.4.

Gosh, the excitement …

At any rate, right now?

I seem to have a version of iMovie that seems to be back up to snuff …

We’ll have to see, won’t we?

At any rate … drifting … ?

Over the past few months, I’ve been doing all sorts of stuff …

OK, granted, I’ve watched a lot of movies, and TV shows … AND read a book or two.

But, when in a TV watching mood … ?

I’ve watched some … at the expense of others.

Including Star Trek Discovery, and the superb El Ministerio del Tiempo, included.

One thing I managed to catch, last year, was the first series of HBO show, Westworld.

And very enjoyable it was, too.

It’s been a year, though.

Given that?

I felt it was time to catch up with series two.

Episode 1Journey into Night — opens with a brief summary of season 1 … then moves quickly to show us Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) and Charlotte (Tessa Thompson) as they desperately try and find out what’s happening, in the days after the massacre started by Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood).

Meanwhile … ?

Dolores is on a mission to hunt down other survivors of the massacre.

As she tells Teddy (James Marsden), she has plans for every single host in the park: and very aware of who’s — notionally — in charge.

Maeve (Thandiwe Newton) is on the hunt for her daughter, whilst William has found some interesting information.

While in a flash forward … ?

Bernard tells a team of investigators he’s responsible for the hosts found drowned …

Now …

What did I make of Journey into Night?

Quite a lot, I think.

Westworld’s first series was a complete drama, in and of itself.

Well written, beautifully acted, with incredibly high production values.

And, in Thandiwe Newton, a series with one of THE most watchable characters in science fiction.

Journey into Night had a lot to live up to.

As did I: it has, after all, been a while since I’ve seen the series.

Have I come back to a good season opener?

Has Journey into Night done the job, and lived up to the challenge?

Yes: I think it has.

Yes: I want to jump right back into El Ministerio del Tiempo’s third — and possibly last series*— but the series two opener of Westworld?

Has piqued my interest.

*        There’s talk of a fourth series: from Jaime Blanch, who plays Salvator, the undersecretary in charge of the Ministry.
