Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 24-7-2019: From The Riverbank

24th July, 2019.

Yes: I know.

I’m heading to Chelmsford.

Which is nice.

Or possibly not nice, given the heat.

The reason?

Given my long term medical position?

I’m putting in for extra, health related, benefits.

The assessment’s in Chelmsford.

Hopefully?

My phone’s Maps function will be able to get me there in time … and won’t leave me running around all over Duke Street.

Oh, just as an extra thought?

I’ve always like the idea of alternative operating systems.

In point of fact?

The first Mac I bought — many moons ago — was a second hand one, running an early version of Ubuntu, called Warty Warthog.

The second hand dealer I bought it from, didn’t have a resellers license for the relevant version of Mac OS X: so that’s I got, instead.

Ubuntu’s open source license is a lot more forgiving of these things.

As a result?   I’ve always like seeing alternative OSes: and felt governments — local and national — could be making more use of software … that’s got very low licensing costs.

To get to the point?

I sneaked into Brentwood Library, yesterday: after installing the current version of Ubuntu onto a live disc.

And seeing how it looks.

Rather good.

To the point I’m tempted to sneak back in and install it on one of their machines …

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Badwolf*, and Debbi† putting in their answers: with all three scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) Fort Pontchartrain was founded by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac: on 24th July, 1701.   It’s now part of which city?
Q2) More to the point, fort and city are on the banks of which river?
Q3) What’s the city’s best known record label?
Q4) The label take’s name from a nickname for the city.   Name, and nickname, refer to which of the city’s industry’s?
Q5) Finally … ?   City and river are home to the J. W. Westcott 2nd: the USA’s only floating what?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) Haile Selassie was born on 23rd July, 1892.   He was Emperor of which country?
A1) Ethiopia.
Q2) What was his (Amharic) name: when he was born … ?
A2) Lij Tafari Makonnen.   (Apparently, Lij is an Amharic title meaning ‘Child’: but with the added implication the holder is a noble child.)
Q3) He was also held the title, Ras: roughly seen — by some — as equivalent to a what: earl, duke or baron?
A3) Duke.   (It can, I’m told, also seen as equivalent as a Prince.)
Q4) He was also known as the Lion of where?
A4) Judah.
Q5) His dynasty claimed to be descended from the Queen of Sheba: and which biblical king?
Q6) Under his rule, Ethiopia was a charter member of what: the African Union, the League of Nations or the United Nations?

A8) Rastafari.
Q9) He made a famous speech in 1936, at the League of Nations, after his country was invaded by whom: China, Italy or the USA?
A9) Italy.   (That invasion is said to be one to the key factors in the collapse of the League.)
Q10) Finally … ?   The Emperor died of either respiratory failure, or strangulation by the group that deposed him.   In which year?
A10) 1975.
Here’s a thought …
“He rose from a modest beginning in Acadia in 1683 as an explorer, trapper, and a trader of alcohol and furs.”
From the Wikipedia entry about Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac.
And a video …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        You’ve hit the nail right on the head, Anne!   I’m hoping the word ‘benign’ is going to be involved, somewhere along the line.   But … ?   Well, I’ll be honest: the phrase ‘lung cancer’ is at the back of my mind, given how long I smoked for.   I’m keeping my fingers crossed there’s sunshine …

†        I keep thinking of a Terry Pratchett character called Cohen the Barbarian, when people mention age, Debbi.   The character was supposed to be decidedly old … but still kept barbarian heroing … !   Oh, apparently, Renée Zellweger’s playing Judy in an upcoming biopic.   She’s going be a shoe-in for an Oscar if she gets that right!
