Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 1-1-2021: The Month of January

1st January, 2022.

Right … it’s now officially 2022.

Frankly?

I’m wishing you — and my regular readers — a Happy New Year.

Here’s hoping it’s better than last year.

Or, at least, less diseased.

COVID’s been hanging around for a while.

Oh, one news item that DID stick in my mind?

You possibly will have seen singing the Robert Burns tune, Auld Lang Syne, on New Year’s Eve: and standing in a circle, with arms cross-linked with those of their neighbours.

It turns out the ritual is linked to the Freemasons: it’s an old tradition of theirs.

Something I wasn’t too surprised about.

Burns was a Mason, after all.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring twelve out of twelve, and Mum on ten.

The day also saw Trevor^ leaving us a message.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        It’s January: the month named after the Roman god, Janus.   How many faces did Janus have: two, three or four?

Q2)        In January, many will be marking Veganuary.   In other words, eating what sort of diet: vegan, vegetarian or fruitarian?

Q3)        January is the first month of the year.   What’s the last month?

Q4)        January River is a river, a state, and a city: in which Portuguese speaking, South American country?

Q5)        Finally … ?   How many days are there, in January: 28, 30 or 31?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        January, 2021, saw Trump supporters attack where: the White House, the Capitol or the World Trade Centre?
A1)        The Capitol.
Q2)        February saw the Perseverance Rover, and the Ingenuity Drone, land at the Jezero Crater.   Where is that crater: Mars, Venus or Mercury?
A2)        Mars.   You can read more about the mission, here.
Q3)        March, 2021, saw the Ever Given get stuck.   Where: the Panama Canal, the Grand Union Canal or the Suez Canal?
A3)        The Suez Canal.
Q4)        April, 2021, saw three leagues try and form the breakaway European Super League.   In which sport: football, cricket or rugby union?
A4)        Football.   (I’m no fan.   But, if I’ve understood the situation correctly, what angered fans was the inability for teams to be promoted to, or demoted from, the league: it was the ultimate in closed shops.)
Q5)        The 2021 Eurovision Song Contest was held: in May of 2021.   It was held in which European city: Rotterdam, Liverpool or Rome?
A5)        Rotterdam.   (Altogether, now … ♫This could be … ♫)
Q6)        Benjamin Netanyahu was voted out of office, in June of 2021.   As Prime Minister of where: Lebanon, Jordan or Israel?
A6)        Israel.
Q7)        July, 2021, saw whom allowed to go to the Islamic Hajj, without a guardian, for the first time, this year: men, women or children?
A7)        Women.
Q8)        The end of August, 2021, saw US troops leave where: the UK, Afghanistan or Syria?
A8)        Afghanistan.
Q9)        The AUKUS security pact went in to force: in August of August, 2021.   Name any one of the three English speaking countries that signed the pact.
A9)        Australia, the USA or the UK.

Q10)        October 2021, saw who going into space on a Blue Origins spaceship: Kate Mulgrew, Patrick Stewart or William Shatner?
A10)        William Shatner.

Q11)        November saw the World Health Organisation convene an emergency meeting.   About which version of COVID 19: Alpha, Delta or Omicron?
A11)        Omicron.

Q12)        Finally … ?   The USA, Canada, Australia and the UK, announced they would be boycotting what: the Winter Olympics, the COP 26 Climate Conference or the World Cup?
A12)        The 2022 Winter Olympics.
Those questions were written on 14th December, 2021: answers are as correct at they can be, at the time of writing.

Here’s a thought …
“That blasts of January
Would blow you through and through.”
A Winter’s Tale, by William Shakespeare.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

The quizmaster’s decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Cheers, Olga!   And Happy New Year to you!
I’m keeping my fingers crossed on the foot front: we’ll have to see what happens.   Especially as none of the podiatrists around here seem to offer a discount of the unemployed!
I hope the meal goes well!

        Hello, Mum!

Cheers, Debbi!   I hope yours and Rick’s goes well!   Oh, JUST in case … ?

^        Cheers, Trevor: have a good new year, yourself … !

It seems I'll have another student from next week. Although she is quite far away from my place, it's only an underground ride (to the end of the line, though), so at least it shouldn't be too expensive to get there. (The prices of the underground here aren't linked to distance, thankfully. A trip is a ticket, no matter how long the distance. Unless you are going to the airport. That is a different fee). And she is studying at the same level as Anna, and preparing for the same Cambridge exam, so I should be able to use the same materials. Wish me luck, anyway!
