9th September, 2024: Tajikistan.
Right … it’s officially Monday.
And I’m up early.
Yes: I’m off to this week’s weight management meeting: in the desperate hope I’ve lost weight.
~≈🏋️♂️≈~
You’re possibly aware I’m a bit of a Mac fan.
So … ?
The company’s expected to release details of it’s new models of iPhone: along with updated versions of its operating systems.
But … ?
There’s also rumours that the company will be releasing a new version of its successful Mac mini line of computers.
Personally?
I’d be interested in seeing those: and in how they’ve both increased the spec: and redesigned the case.
~≈💻≈~
Just as a last thought … ?
I managed to catch the first episode of Babylon 5, last night: as I’d never actually seen it.
Granted, this first episode seems very American, very soap opera and — with the monologue in the opening titles — owes a nod to Star Trek.
And Commander Sinclair seems to be exactly the kind of authority figure Terry Pratchett was parodying in Sam Vimes.
But … ?
It looks like it’s worth watching: even if my first thought was that it’s Star Trek, done by Republicans!
Let’s move on.
Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.
Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?
Q1) 9th September is Independence Day in Tajikistan. It marks the country’s independence from where: the USSR, USA or the Russian Federation?Q2) Modern Tajikistan is a what: republic, monarchy or theocracy?Q3) What’s Tajikistan’s capital: Dushanbe, Khujand or Bokhtar?Q4) What’s Tajikistan’s currency: the rouble, rupee or the Somoni?Q5) Finally … ? Does Tajikistan have a coastline?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 8th September is a day that celebrates Asturias. Asturias is an autonomous community, where: Spain, Portugal or France?A1) Spain.Q2) Modern Asturias is a what: principality, duchy or archduchy?A2) Principality.Q3) What’s the region’s official language?A3) Spanish. (As far as I can see from the Wikipedia entries, the legal status of Asturian is murky.)Q4) Fabada asturiana is an Asturian what: stew, soup or loaf?A4) Stew.Q5) Finally … ? The Gaita asturiana is a what: guitar, bagpipe or trumpet?A5) A bag pipe.
Here’s a thought …
“Tajikistan is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east.”From the Wikipedia entry on Tajikistan.
And an anthem …
Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.
Decisions about scores are final.
Thank you for coming: have a good day.
* Hello, Mum!
† That reminds me, Olga, as we’ve mentioned stew: I’m going to have to start batch cooking some, next payday: it does come in handy!
I know what you mean about visiting parts of a home country: there’s bit’s of Essex — and the UK — I’ve never seen, but keep meaning to! My two sisters are far better travelled, in that regard. (As I recall? My step father had property in Andalusia: another part of the world I’ve not seen.)
That reminds me … I have to walk up the hill for my weight management class, today. I’ll need my coat: it looks like it’s going to rain … …
(Asturian’s called Bable? I have to wonder if that name’s linked to the words, Babel, or Babble?)
Yes, I saw the recent post, Debbi: and left you a comment: I hope things improve!
3 comments:
Q1) the USSR
Q2) A republic
Q3) Dushanbe
Q4) Somoni (if the wikipedia spelling is correct. It seems it is named after a historical figure, a king of old, although it seems they spell his name Samani as well. I know, it is even more complicated with different alphabets.)
Q5) No
I'll have to investigate on the origins of the name Bable. I have no idea, but I remember learning about the different languages as a child, even when they weren't considered "languages" or allowed to be used in an official capacity. (A lot of people spoke Catalan when I was small, but you weren't allowed to study it in schools, and you couldn't use it anywhere officially. They taught it in the primary school I attended, but the grades and everything else were not included in the official paperwork. Things changed when Franco died, but it took a while, and I remember when I went to secondary school (he died when I was 10) most of the other students had never studied Catalan. So, I had a bit of an advantage.
I hope the meeting goes well today.
I remember watching some Babylon 5 years back, but I can't recall any details.

Thanks, Paul! At some point, I'll be able to get treatment at NIH again. Which merely masks the symptoms. But it's better than nothing.
Meanwhile, I got a potato. Or po-tah-to. As you wish! :)
I have the vaguest memories of Babylon Five. I don't recall the politics. Mainly, I remember the guy who played Checkov on Star Trek having a scene where he said, "Be seeing you," to someone and giving the salute. :)
I was like, "Oh, boy. A Prisoner reference!" :)
